Llandudno North Shore

A clean sand beach backed by shingle and flanked by the Great Orme and Little Orme headlands. It blows hot and cold with good catches one night, nothing the next. Long range casters enjoy the most consistent fishing due to the relatively flat nature of the beach, but plenty of fish are caught close in. It fishes best during the winter months.

SPECIES
Whiting, codling, bass, dabs, dogfish, plaice, flounder, smoothound and coalfish

BEST BAITS
Lugworm is the top all round bait for everything, but tipping with crab or mussel takes more bass, coalfish and codling. Ragworm or crab are good flounder baits, with plaice taking rag tipped with crab or mussel. For the better late autumn and winter whiting tip lug with sandeel or mackerel, or fish sections of sandeel.

TACKLE
Distance is the key on this beach at times, especially over low water and during the mid flood tide so a 5-6oz beachcaster, small multiplier and 15lb line with a 60lb shock leader is the best choice with 5oz release wire leads. Shorter casts are more effective over high water when the fish move right in to the junction of sand and shingle, especially the coalies.

For general species use a three-hook flapper and size 2 Aberdeen hooks for casting close for the whiting, flatties and coalfish, but choose a clipped up two-hook rig and size 2 Aberdeen's for longer range fishing and the summer plaice. The cod, smoothound and bass anglers prefer a single 4/0 hook or two hook pennel rig clipped down for long range fishing.

If you have the room between anglers, use a lighter plain lead and move the bait from time to time. This puts more fish in the bag on this pretty much featureless beach.

GETTING THERE
Come off the A55 at Colwyn Bay following the A546 road to the beach. Plenty of parking above the beach and you're fishing close to the car.
