The numerous rock marks west of Aberdaron on the Lleyn Peninsula will see some excellent huss fishing throughout the month. Fish to double figures are fairly common with recent seasons captures including fish over 16lbs.
Most anglers would target the larger spring tides, but it's not that important. Huss will be within casting range on all sizes of tide, but feed best during the early ebb period. The bulk of the fish will be hooked at night, though good fish can be caught in daylight from the deeper water marks. Casting distance is not important. Most fish are taken less than 50yds from the rocks.
Whilst fresh mackerel, or the blast frozen alternative, are fair baits for huss, you'll do much better using a fresh chunk from a whiting or codling caught from the mark you are fishing, or best of all is frozen sandeel. Not the small estuary eels so much, but the larger launce variety.
Tackle losses can be very heavy, so keep terminal tackle to a minimum. Hooks should be strong enough to handle big fish, but able to be bent out of snags by 30lb main line. Mustad Vikings are what the locals use.
Actual marks are many fold and can be found using an ordnance survey map and following the footpaths. Some require parking the car in a farmers field, so do ask permission first. It's not the easiest access but the fishing is well worth the effort.
HOW TO GET THERE
From the west, take the A497 from Porthmadog to Llanbedrog. Take the right hand turn onto the B4413 to Aberdaron.
From the north take the A487 from Caernarfon, then a right turn onto the A499 to Pwllheli and Llanbedrog. Take the right hand road, the B4413, for Aberdaron.
If you take the Uwchmynydd road this ends in a car park which most anglers use as a base for access to the rocks on the southwestern end of the peninsula.
