Glan-y-Don Point, Marina Road, Pwllheli, Gwynedd
This is the deeper south side of the navigation channel that leads to the marina. You fish off a grass bank straight in to the deep main channel over a seabed of weed and clean sand.
It fishes best from low water to high water, and for the first two hours of the ebb tide. Weed can be a problem after storms, but this mark is fishable when the open coast is ruled out by bad weather.
SPECIES
The spring fishing kicks off with bass, flounder and eels in April, and by late May in to June the mullet and black bream arrive, with occasional bream topping 3lbs. June through to late August gives garfish, mullet, bass, flounder, eels, dogfish and even small rays.
September and October produce the occasional very big bass, plus whiting and dabs are caught. School bass, dabs and whiting, with some cracking flounder over 2lbs are the mainstay through Christmas to February.
BEST BAITS
Crab is the best bass, flounder and eel bait. The mullet take float fished bread or mackerel flake. Use float fished mackerel strip for the garfish. Worm baits take dabs, whiting and dogfish, with the bream taking mackerel and sandeel strip, plus ragworm or lugworm.
TACKLE
A 2 to 4oz bass rod is man enough for most conditions here with a 6500 sized reel and 15lb line. Carry grip leads though, as the tide can run quickly up the channel during the bigger spring tides.
Top rigs are three-hook flappers for the bream, whiting, dabs, dogfish and school bass. The bigger bass are best fished for on a sliding ledger with a flowing trace. The same rig takes any rays.
Waggler floats or bubble floats are handy for the garfish and mullet with size 10 hooks, alternatively use a cage feeder and bread for the mullet. Spinners and small Redgills take bass.
GETTING THERE
At Porthmadog take the A487 for Pwllheli. As you reach the 30mph limit when entering Pwllheli, about 300-yards on you take the left turn over the bridge signposted for the marina. Continue on down the road for about a third of mile past the marina and boat yards. You come to a turn round area. Park here and the channel is 40-yards away on the west side.
