Mochras Bar, Llanfair, Gwynedd
MARK DESCRIPTION
A small estuary mouth with rough ground running the edge of the main channel, but clean sand banks on the seaward side.
The estuary mouth itself fishes best for bass, but the open beach just to the right also gives good returns of summer flounder, bass, eels and dogfish, plus winter whiting and dabs.
Heavy local gill netting has severely reduced the bigger bass population here, but fish over 6lbs can still be contacted.
METHODS
Tackle losses can be heavy, but spinners and redgills worked across the rivermouth produce bass to 6lbs during flood tides. Baits worked with the tide using a rolling ledger locate flounder, dogfish, bass and eels.
From the open beach long casting is not necessary in a rough sea, but in calm weather distance is the key to consistent catches as the beach is very shallow. Two and three hook rigs are best for variety, but one hook rigs clipped down gain distance when needed. A wishbone rig is the best winter rig for whiting and dabs.
BEST TIMES
Bass to 2lbs are present pretty well all year, as are the flounders and dogfish. Bigger bass appear by mid April with the eels and stay until late September. There are also big shoals of mullet passing through the rivermouth from May on, leaving in September.
The open beach fishes best in the autumn for flats, whiting and dogs, especially over low water on a spring tide. High water can be hit and miss, but shoals of mackerel will move close inshore during July and August if the weather is very settled. Neaps are generally poor. Big tides produce occasional thornback ray to 8lbs to baits at maximum
distance.
BAITS
Worm and fish combinations take most species, but sandeel and crab is a wise choice for any bigger bass. The thornbacks take mackerel, squid, even lug. After Christmas, try fresh or frozen razorfish which tends to seek out the better flounder after prolonged storms.
GETTING THERE
From Porthmadog on the A487, or at Ganllwyd on the A470 take the A496 to Llanfair. Look for the Llandanwg turn off in the village and follow this road to a car park by Llandanwg Church. Walk through the sand dunes and then left for 1/4 of a mile to the rivermouth.
