Morfa Bychan, Porthmadog, Gwynedd
MARK DESCRIPTION
A very shallow beach comprising mostly clean sand and best fished only over low water. Carries a surf during a southwest or south wind, but the nearby Traeth Bach estuary at Porthmadog sees transitory bass heading for the estuary work along the beach most tides immaterial of weather conditions.
There are deeper gullies running along the low water line of the beach and these tend to carry the bulk of the fish.
Target the bass from May right through to October. Most are school bass, but fish to specimen size are always on the cards, especially from mid August to October.
Several reports of big fast running fish lost from the shore over the past years, and caught fish from boats indicate stingray are possible here. These tend to show from late June until August over rising middle sized tides.
Flounder are present virtually all year, but show a peak in April and May as spent fish return from spawning. Bigger fish show in the winter when they are returning to the sea. Eels occur from April to September.
Autumn and winter catches include dogfish, whiting, dabs and rockling. Very long casts occasionally contact autumnal thornback rays and small turbot to 2lbs.
TACKLE AND BAIT
Distance is often the key to success here, even for the bass, therefore standard beachcasters, 5oz leads and 15lb line with a shock leader should be chosen.
The bass and flounder run closer during a good surf and lighter bass rods and 3oz leads can then be used.
Top bait for bass is crab or king ragworm. Crab or razorfish are best for the bigger flounders, but lug baits should be used when targeting general species. Chunks of peeler crab or fish baits take the thornbacks, with sandeel best for the turbot.
