Nefyn Beach, Gwynedd
BAITS
Lug and rag are essential for the plaice, dabs and whiting. Crab also takes the plaice along with the bigger bass. Fish frozen sandeel for the rays, though the thornbacks also take a mix of mackerel and squid. Razorfish can fish very well here for everything after a good blow, especially the small-eyed ray and bass.
TACKLE AND TACTICS
Long range can help here, so a 5-6oz beachcaster with a 6500 sized reel and 15lb with a 60lb shock leader is a good all round choice. Leads of 5 and 6oz with grip wires will handle most conditions here.
For the flatfish and whiting, a simple three-hook rig works well using size 2 Kamasan Aberdeen's, though if you specifically want the plaice then a wishbone rig with silver sequins or a silver plastic attractor blade added to each hook trace will work better. For the bass and rays a one-hook clipped down rig and size 3/0 Viking hook to a 30lb mono hook link is ideal.
The plaice are best targeted in daylight over low water with a good cast needed to reach them. The rays have been showing at night towards high water, as have the whiting and dabs. Rougher conditions are needed for the bass with the bulk of the fish coming from the beach to the right of the car park in rare south westerly winds and at night.
LOCATION
From the A55 at Bangor take the A487 for Caernarfon, then the A499 for Llanhaelhaearn. At Llanhaelhaearn take the B4417 Nefyn and follow the signpost to the beach. There is a small parking area just above the beach on the right hand side.
