Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey
BAITS
Lugworm and rag or a mix of the two tipped with squid or sandeel takes the whiting and dabs. Black lug is the best bait for flounder, though the bass like the lug tipped with squid or crab. Also try razorfish for the bigger flounder from November on, and half a sandeel to pick out the bigger whiting.
TACKLE AND TACTICS
A clean sand beach with a deeper low water gully. Walk left of the village to fish the deep gully from low water up. Alternatively fish the spring tides the two hours before high water. The beach is inconsistent at best on the ebb, though big flounder can show from the deep gully. Night fishing always produces the best results. For the bass look for a good northwest to northerly wind after a period of gales to create surf and hold the fish inshore.
Long casting can help here, so choose a 5-6oz beachcaster, 6500 sized reels and 15lb line with a 60lb shock leader. Top rigs are three-hook flapper rigs with size 1 Aberdeen's, or for longer range use a clipped down two-hook rig for general species. To target the bass use a clipped down one-hook rig and two size 4/0 hook rigged pennel style. 5oz grip leads hold in most conditions, but carry a few 6oz if fishing big tides and heavy surf conditions.
LOCATION
On Anglesey take the A5025 heading for Benllech. Two miles past Pentraith take a sign-posted right turn for Red Wharf Bay. Park in the car park on the seafront.
