Sarn Bach Beach, Lleyn Peninsula
Take the A497 from Porthmadog to Pwllheli, then the A499 direct to Abersoch. Parking is available in the town it self, or follow the one way system through the town turning left towards the golf course, down the hill and you see the parking area directly infront of you. Walk down the road to the left of the car park for 150yds to reach the beach. Another car park is situated further along to towards the western end of the beach and is sign posted.
SPECIES
A favoured venue during the mid summer period on evening tides for dogfish, bass, eels, flounders, dabs and occasional rays. Mackerel shoals can move right in on the beach during spring tide high waters in July and August. Big mullet abound in the harbour area.
Whiting move inshore during late September. The east end of the beach is a good venue for large autumn bass and flounder. Winter catches are mainly whiting, dabs, dogfish, flounder and rockling with school bass staying until Christmas.
TIME AND TIDES
The best catches come during the flood period of big spring tides, but dead low and high water are also good. Big bass are frequently caught during autumn storms at low water.
Daylight is rarely any good here, especially during the summer when the beach is popular with bathers and boaters. Night tides are best, and even neap tides in the dark will give good whiting, dab and dogfish returns.
TACKLE
Standard 5oz beachcasters give the choice of dropping baits in close for whiting and dabs, or casting further out in the hope of rays, bigger bass etc.
A simple three hook rig is the better choice for close in fishing when variety is the target. At longer range, choose a two hook rig with clips, or single hook paternoster with clipped down Mustad Aberdeen 3261 BLN hooks.
For bass and flounder, a short hook length of 12-inches (30cms) on a paternoster rig works well. Use Mustad Aberdeen hooks sized between 1 to 1/0 for the flounder, and 4/0 Mustad Bass hooks for the bass. In calmer seas, fish a long and low paternoster as an alternative.
WEATHER
Calm seas and settled weather patterns are best for flounders, whiting, rays and dabs. Rougher seas suit the bass and dogfish, with the period just after a good sou'westerly blow excellent. Avoid the rivermouth area during periods of heavy rain as this forces the fish further out beyond casting range.
BAITS
There are good razorfish beds exposed along the beach on the low water line of the biggest spring tides. Also a few biggish black lug. Odd peeler crab can be found along the harbour perimeters under weed etc. There are also odd patches of blow lug, but these constantly move with each storm.
Shops in the town sell frozen and fresh fish, and the tackle shops also stock frozen baits.
