PROSPECTS
A good post Christmas beach fishing well for whiting through January, with good dabs staying until the end of March. Dogfish are present all year but are present in big shoals during March and then again in September and October. Thornbacks can appear as early as January, but the best fishing is from late April through until September. Bass run the beach, but most are the smaller school fish, though after storms bigger bass to 6lbs can be taken casting close in at high water. April, May and June sees small plaice taken in daylight, spotted ray from may, and black bream are also recorded from June to August. Mackerel and garfish come close in on calm summer nights and spring tides. The whiting are back again by September, followed by the main dab run in October. Some codling are reported after gales during November and December and the same period produces flounders. Smaller species include rockling, pout and poor cod.
TIDES
Fishes best for the variety of species on the bigger spring tides and these give the best chance of thornbacks and black bream. Whiting feed well on the neaps, as do the dabs. Big casters score well at low water for rays. Night time gives the best results, especially during the summer months when tourist activity makes day fishing a waste of time.
WEATHER
Fishes best in a southwest 4-5 wind for bass. Rays show well in calm seas with a gentle southerly to southwest breeze. Calm seas are needed for the whiting and black bream. Easterly winds slow the fishing right down and catches are small. Very good in settling, coloured seas after a storm for all species. Weed can be a problem, though.
TACKLE AND RIGS
A standard beachcaster casting 5-6ozs will cover everything except spinning for mackerel. Line strength need only be 15lb and a shock leader. Some anglers drop to 12lb in calm seas to get more distance. If the weeds bad after a storm go up to 20lb main line. A 1oz spinning rod, small fixed spool and 8lb line covers the mackerel spinning.
Use a two or three hook rig for the whiting, dabs, school bass and dogfish etc, armed with Mustad 3261BLN Aberdeen's size 4 or 2. Choose a two hook rig for the bream sticking with the Aberdeen's in size 4. A one hook rig clipped down should be used for the rays with either a single 3/0 Mustad Viking 79515 for the crab, or a pennel rig using two Viking 3/0's and sandeel.
Dabs take best fishing three booms and short 6-inch (15cms) hook lengths with size 4 or 2 Aberdeen hooks.
BAITS
Lug and rag baits work well for any bass, plaice, dabs, rockling, pout and dogs. Mackerel strip or squid strip is good for the bream, whiting and dabs. Peeler crab tipped with a mackerel strip is the top bait for thornbacks, but also try frozen sandeel which will also take the better whiting and spotted ray. No bait on the beach. Frozen bait etc, available from the tackle shop and also Fishmongers carry fresh mackerel and herring.
