The Gorad, Menai Bridge, Anglesey

BAITS
Peeler or soft crab is the only bait worth using for the bass, flounder and eels. Try a whole squid or a mackerel fillet for the conger.

TACKLE AND TACTICS
You can fish along most of the shore here from rocks covered in weed, but most anglers fish towards the broken wall, which is visible either side of low water, casting in to the main channel. The tide run is very strong, so the best fishing is during the neaps and middle sized tides the two hours before and after low water, though the bass tend to show on the early flood just as the tide is picking up. Dawn is an especially good time for the bass, with the dark hours seeing the conger.

The bottom is extremely rough in places resulting in heavy tackle losses, so tough gear is paramount. Go for a stiff 5-6oz beachcaster and a reel loaded with 30lb line straight through. 5oz leads are okay around low water fished to a weak link system, but regulars here carry 8oz leads with soft grip wires that release with pressure to minimise snagging and lead losses.

For bass a short 20-inch long flowing trace works best made from 30lb line and a single size 4/0 hook. For the conger change the hook trace to 120lb mono and a size 8/0. In both cases the bait needs to be sat hard on the seabed to find the fish.

Alternatively try two-hook rigs cast in to the shallower patches of mud between the rocks along this stretch for occasional big flounder and eels. Size 2 Aberdeen's are perfect for this.

LOCATION
Take the A5 and cross the Railway Bridge. At the end of the bridge take a left turn then an immediate right turn on to the A4080 for Menai Bridge. A short distance down on the right hand side is a lay-by. Park here, walk through the gate at the top of the lay-by and follow the path down and to the right.
