Traeth Crugan, Llanbedrog, Gwynedd

MARK DESCRIPTION
A picturesque mark looking south across Cardigan Bay with a wooded headland on the right-hand side.

The low water mark comprises patches of clean sand, shingle and boulders, but quickly gives way to more cleaner ground of gravel and coarse sand towards high water.

Primarily a bass beach. The bass appear during mid April, with the peak time through June. Fewer, but bigger fish work the beach in the September and October period, even staying until November in mild winters. Smaller bass to 2lbs can be contacted pretty well all year.

Dogfish are the other mainstay, but occasional huss are also taken here throughout the summer to long casts, and the autumn months see whiting and dabs resident over the cleaner ground.

Unlike many beaches it can produce well during neap tides, but is prone to carrying weed during rough weather. Most fish come over low water, and high water is less consistent.

TACKLE AND BAIT
Fish work close here, so calm seas allow bass rods and light leads, but in the more productive rougher ground go for 18lb line to combat abrasion problems.

Standard beachcasters are needed for rougher seas and for the huss and autumn whiting, and for fishing close to the headland where the ground is roughest.

Crab is scarce here, but essential for success with the bass. Fresh mackerel or sandeel baits should be used for the huss, with dabs and whiting taking worm baits tipped with fish.

Fishes best in moderate southwest winds and cloudy skies, as the water here is very clear.

HOW TO GET THERE
From Pwllheli, take the A499 towards Llanbedrog. About a mile past the village of Penrhos there is a small white road turning to the left. It's easily missed and not sign posted. Plenty of space to park along the roads side with the footpath down to the beach where the road ends.
