Tywyn North Beach, Gwynedd
Approach from Machynlleth (south) or Dolgellau (north) on the A493. At the top of the high street, take the north road at the cross roads, then bear right immediately before the railway crossing. Follow this road for .5 of a mile and beach is immediately on the left over the railway line. Plenty of road side parking.
SPECIES
Dogfish get the year underway in mid March when they migrate inshore. Spawned flounder return from the end of March along with the first eels heading for the river mouth at the northern end of the beach. Bass, smaller school bass mainly, show in the surf right through the summer accompanied by dogs, flatfish etc. Garfish and mullet can be caught fishing close in to the rivers out flowing current with float tackle. Mackerel can be right in on the shoreline when a spring high tide coincides with late evening. The whiting move back inshore during early September and can be taken in fair numbers, but a fish of 1lb is a good one. October brings dabs, pout, rockling and few small codling and turbot to 3lbs in closer, plus inevitable dogfish. The autumn months see occasional small eyed and thornback rays taken on squid baits.
TIME AND TIDES
This is a shallow beach of mainly sand, but intersected with small patches of shingle and banks of peat left over from a prehistoric forest. Try to find the parallel gullies that hold the fish. Fish only at night for all species except mullet and gars. Spring tides are the best with neaps very inconsistent.
WEATHER
Calm seas are best for mackerel, gars, rays and dogfish. Bass and codling can show after a blow. Whiting like settling seas after a westerly wind. Gales can bring huge rafts of weed close in making fishing impossible.
TACKLE
Long range is a big advantage here. Use a standard beachcaster with 5ozs of lead and clipped down one hook rigs for the rays, and a two hook or three hook rig for the dabs, whiting, flatfish etc.
A spinning rod, fixed spool reel and 8lb line is a sporting outfit for bass and mackerel on spinners.
BAITS
The best bass bait is crab throughout the year, but these are scarce locally, as is lug and other baits. Fish baits, either mackerel or sandeel take the dogfish and rays, plus gars. Flounder take mussels, crab and worm. Squid is good for small eyed ray and dabs. Mullet will take maggots.
