White Beach, Anglesey

BAITS
Mackerel and squid in small strips take the whiting and dabs, with bigger strips taking the dogfish. Lugworm and ragworm are good for the codling.

For the conger use whole single squid or half fillets of mackerel, or a fresh whole whiting or poor cod. Any thornbacks take a combination of mackerel tipped with squid or whole sandeel.

TACKLE AND TACTICS
This is actually a rock ledge mark with clean sand straight out in front of you and rough ground in to the bay on the west side, which holds the codling and conger. It fishes well on all sizes of tide, but spring tides fish best over the sand, with the smaller neaps better for the bigger conger.

There is a strong lateral tide current on the bigger tides, so pick a 5-6oz beachcaster and 15 to 18lb line with 60lb shock leader. Grip leads up to 6oz with long wires are advisable for long range fishing over sand during the peak tide run. For the conger switch to a reel loaded with 30lb line straight through and fish a weak link to the lead.

Good all round rigs over sand are either a three-hook flapper with size 2 Aberdeen's, or a two-hook wishbone rig with the same hooks. For the conger and codling an 80lb pulley rig works well with 4/0 Viking hooks rigged pennel style. The thornbacks are at long range, so you need a one-hook clipped down rig and single 3/0 hook to maximise distance.

LOCATION
Not easy to find! Take the A545 in to Beaumaris, then the B5109 in to Llangoed village. Take the left turn signposted for Mariandrys village. As you come up the hill by the houses take the right turn and then the first road to the left towards Fedw Fawr Farm. Follow this narrow road all the way to the end where there is a small parking place. Walk back the way you came until the road meets the stone wall, cross the field heading towards the furthest rocky headland which is White Beach. The path is obvious as you cross the field. You can also fish the rocks directly below the car park area by following the path.
