BAITS
Frozen sandeel is rated as the top bait for the small-eyed and the dogfish. The flounder take lug, ragworm or crab, but the bigger fish often go for a strip of mackerel or half a sandeel. For bass use a good sized chunk of peeler crab, a whole small squid or the head of a squid, or a big lug worm bait.

TACKLE AND TACTICS
In calmer seas you can each the bass, ray and flounder easily with a 2-4oz bass rod, 15lb line, 40lb shock leader and 3ozs of lead using a one-hook rig or a simple sliding ledger rig with 3/0 Viking hooks. The ray tend to be less than 50-yds out and it's easy to overcast them.

The bass show best in rougher seas during the bigger spring tides, so also carry a 5-6oz beachcaster, 6500 sized reel with 15 to 18lb line and 60lb shock leader, and go for a clipped down one-hook rig to gain distance. This tackle set up also works well for the rays in the same conditions. The whole beach produces bass, but fishing close to the rocks on the right hand side of the Golf Course gives the bigger fish the two hours over low water.

From late August the better flounder show fishing in to the river outflow during the last hour of the ebb, over low water and for the first two hours of the flood tide.

LOCATION
From the M4 motorway take the A48 to Carmarthen, then the A40 to Fishguard. From Fishguard follow the A487 and you pass through Newport. Take the second left sign posted for the Golf Course. From Aberystwyth follow the A487 and take the right hand road as you come in to Newport sign posted for the Golf Course. There is a car park above the beach.
