Tan-Y-Bwch Beach, Aberystwyth
BAITS
The bulk of the fish fall to lug, either frozen black tipped with blow, or just blow lug. Ragworm works well for the whiting tipped with sandeel or mackerel. Any conger take whole squid or chunks of squid, also mackerel.
TACKLE AND TACTICS
Ground feature depends where you fish. Rougher ground is found close to the south corner, which is where the conger and coalfish come from. The middle of the beach at long range finds cleaner sand. It fishes best on the spring tides the two hours either side of high water, though the hour either side of low water can also be productive.
The flounder tend to come casting just to the left of the stone jetty at the north end of the beach. Use a two-hook slider rig and size 2 Aberdeen's for these over dead low water. The biggest flounder turn up in a coloured sea after a storm.
Due to the chance of snags most anglers fish a Penn 525 loaded with 20 to 22lb line and a stiff 5-6oz beachcaster. Three hook flapper rigs with size 2 Aberdeen hooks will catch most species, though at long range also try a two-hook Bomber rig. For the conger use a pulley rig on 60lb line and a single size 6/0 hook.
LOCATION
As you come in to Aberystwyth from the south side, just before the Fire Station take the first left turn signposted "Traeth" which means beach. Follow the road to the right past the car showroom and continue on until you come to a carp park above the beach.
