BAITS
Lug and rag are the mainstay bait for the whiting, bass, dabs and flounder, but tip with mackerel or sandeel for the bigger whiting. The turbot take sandeel sections or small strips of mackerel. The bigger flounder are keen on razorfish or sand clam.

TACKLE AND TACTICS
Winter fishing requires a 5-6oz beachcaster and a reel holding 15 to 18lb line and a 60lb shock leader. Calmer nights the flatties and whiting can be fished for with a bass or carp rod and just 12lb line with a 30lb shock leader and 3ozs of lead.

It pays to fish two rods here, one in close with a three-hook flapper or three boom rig targeting the flounder and turbot, and a two-hook clipped up rig or wishbone rig for the whiting, bass, dogs and whiting. Hooks need be no bigger than size 2 Aberdeen's.

Carry both plain and grip leads in sizes 5oz and 6oz. Use a plain lead when casting close to let the bait roll with the surf as this is a top method to find the turbot.

Borth is compromised of mainly clean sand, but also has areas of old peat beds left over from a prehistoric forest that can claim some tackle when casting to long range, especially after storms have exposed more of the peat. It fishes best at night during the flooding tide, but especially when the water reaches the ends of the wooden groynes. A gentle force 2 to 3 southwest wind is ideal creating good surf tables.

LOCATION
From Machynlleth take the A487 towards Aberystwyth. At Taliesin take the right turn on to the B4353 straight in to Borth. From the main A470 road at Llangurig, take the A44 to Aberystwyth, then the A487 out of town. As you come up Penglais Hill at the top take the B4572 in to Borth. Roadside parking behind the beach.
