Ynyslas Beach, Borth

Typical west facing surf beach being shallow clean sand and backed by shingle. The Dovey Estuary flanks the right-hand side of the beach. Takes on a big surf in south-west and west winds.

Produces bass from May through to November, the bigger bass showing in the autumn after storms.

A good mark on low water spring tides for small-eyed rays, thornbacks and turbot during April, May and June, and again in September and October.

Produces good numbers of whiting from September, and big dabs from October. A few codling show either side of Christmas but are very inconsistent.

Flounders, dogfish and school bass are year round residents. The big spring tides in summer produce good mackerel and also garfish. Also expect big eels fishing towards the estuary during spring and early summer.

Look for lateral gullies running across the beach and fish these as the fish are often concentrated here.

TACKLE & BAIT
Long casting is the key for a variety of species so a 5oz beachcaster, small multiplier and 15lb line are best with 5oz leads. Carp or bass rods are okay for short casting and calmer conditions.

One-hook clipped down rigs are ideal for rays, bass and turbot, but switch to a two or three-hook rig for the smaller species.

Sandeel and mackerel are good for the rays and turbot. Crab takes the bass, but mix worm and fish for the whiting and dabs.

GETTING THERE
Access is off the A487 taking the B4353 at Tre'r-ddol. This brings you to Ynyslas and then a T-junction with Borth village sign-posted to the left. You can fish anywhere here taking the road either left or right. There is a car park and some roadside parking out of season.
