A few fish this evening, with one almost ending up being taken by a dolphin!!!!..first for us. There seemed to be a feeding frenzy going on about 300m from the beach with smaller patches of fish chassing baits onto the sand. My son was stoked with his now personal best salmon of around 11lb on the boga grips. Tackle was his usual 8ft spin rod and halco twisty 30g. A few hooks were straightened after this bigger fish was landed so no doubt a few better fish to keep him keen to get among them again soon.

Not a touch again on the bigger rods ( 13ft ) with baits. My daughter went out in the boat today for a total of 9 hounds to around 10kg but otherwise quiet, back to chassing tuna for tomorrow.

Salmon are awsome fighters, as you can see from their flesh they have a deep bloodline, something common in speedy pelagic species. Normally we release these but having run out of smoked fish the plan had been to keep a few for smoking and a couple for bait.

They're ok when the deep red is removed but they are a pretty firm flesh more like tuna in texture. They smoke up very well.

That meat looks very similar to little tunny/false albacore which make good sushi like all tunas.

maybe this fish is good for sushi too?

No it's firmer than albacore and other tuna, it's simular to mackerel only firmer. It's funny as their fight is like a giant mackerel and simply don't seem to tire which is why they make such good catch and release fish.
