Give Clacton pier a go. I caught 2 there last Monday although only managed to land 1.

I used a pulley rig with a 3ft snood and size 3/0 hook baited with a couple of rag worm.

Seems the best place for smooth hounds is after the end shelter and cast out about 60 yards.

Other more knowledgeable people on this site may give you better advice and better locations.

We live around the Benfleet area...tried Reculver a couple of times last month but weed was an issue n no smoothies were caught along the whole stretch on both occasions.... we did manage a decent hound session last year at Yarmouth so that's in the diary to revisit soon ...
but would like to have a bash somewhere else as well...

If you put the miles in I’ll get your rewards, I know Yarmouth north beach is showing a lot of them as per usual and the lincs coast. Quite a few down on the south coast as well, but personally prefer Yarmouth as it’s generally quieter, if you can get crab n that’s a good start, last year we had plenty on Frozen hermit crabs

There's some coming out at Langney Point,Eastbourne, also along Herne bay up towards Shakespere Beach which i think is Margate area, in the Dark is best but they're there one day and not the next, you need luck, Good Luck.

As mad Cyril said there on canvey, although not of great size ,and a bit hit and miss. Fish at southalls after dark with peeler and distance is a massive advantage, get there early and you can collect your own peeler and save your place as can get busy as it seems to be only spot to produce. Also looking out to sea to your right is all rocks so beware. It's on your doorstep so well worth a go hope this helps
