Had my first cod session of the year on Monday, got to Dungie at silly o'clock (03.30) and went up the boards to fish as the wind had turned to northerly. Plenty of space available and the guy right off the end of the boards had a cod of 15lb+ laying at his feet.
Set up to the left of him and put some bait out, I was using cuttle, squid, worms and crab. By 09.00 I had loads of whiting and three seagulls to my credit. Made a couple of rig changes and decided to put out two hook flapper rigs packed with worms. About an hour after low water one of my rods arched right over and the first thought was to look for seagulls, none in sight so i picked the rod up and it started to pull me down the shingle bank. After what seemed like a life time of very slow pumping and twice having to give line there was a rather large tail flapping around in the surf. Watching the waves I chose a big one to give a heafty pull and my fishing partner darted in to pick the fish up. We had not seen a cod this big for a fair few years and at first we thought it was a twenty. Put it on the scales and it went 18lb 8oz dead on the line. This beat my previous best by over 7lb.
After taking loads of pictures and trying to stop my hands from shaking I rebaited and cast back out again. After around 30mins the same rod arched over again, this one did not feel so big but it still put up a good acount for itself. Same as before my mate went in to get the fish and getting wet feet in the process. This one went on the scales at 9lb 8oz.
No more cod for the rest of the session, just whiting. Did get to see a nice sunset before I went. Weather permitting I will be back next week to have another go.
