525 mag magnet's problem

1040 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  chris grace
Hi all, I've just stripped my penn down to give it a quick clean and noticed 2 of the magnets had come out of the holder and stuck to each other. Everytime i put them back they just come out again and stick to the one beside it.
Thanx in Advance

hope to see you sunday?
never had a problem with any of mine:)
just do search on 525mags
then tell me there the dogs nuts
as for dont like dont know as i would not buy one just on all the probs that show on this site alone .
I have a 535 Tmag that 20lb line jumps down the side so have to run 28lb line
the build qulity leaves somthing to work on..

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, but sales versus returns figures do not lie. Over the lifespan of the 525 sized reels, we have a return rate / spares request rate due to some failure of the reel due to our fault of less than 1/4 of 1% - and frankly, I can live with that.

As for the problem on this thread - we have freely admitted we do not glue in ANY magnets - to do this would be dictating the number of magnet you MUST use - something which varies widely across all anglers.

Other problems - we try to resolve as quickly as possible, but to comment on build quality :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: really do not think so - only comments we have had on this score is that they are completely OVER engineered for the task at hand.

I think most of the threads started recently amount to a lack of knowledge on how the reel works, as opposed to any build quality problems.

The only thing letting the reel down is the ratchet (plastic construction instead of metal - about time Penn sorted this), other than that they are excellent reels.

the words bomb proof , foolfroof and wellmade spring to mind
I think you're gonna see lot's of threads on the most popular reels.......
Other than this problem with the magnets it's been a great reel, cast's ok, will winch in the QE2 and needs pretty low maintenance. I run the reel under cold water, spray with WD40 after every session and oil the bearing every dozen session's.
Thinking about getting a MagExtra but that's another thread
Thanx for all the info

As far as I am concerned my Penn Mags are my Ferraris, then I use them for fishing nt driving or tournament casting.

I have got to agree with you now, when I first got it I thought it was great but now, mine is screaming whilst casting and the mags have fallen out in the past. I glued mine back in after some help from people on here.

Whilst I understand what Penn are saying about the mags, they also need to think about the guys who don't have a forum like this for help or are unable to take reels apart to fix the mags in place. I would not have known that the mags need to be put it +-+- until I read it on this site.
Penn reels do it for me I have two 525`s , a 535 and a Surfmaster and never had problems with any of them sure there are other makes of reels which are also very good Diawa and ABU come to mind but it`s all down to personal choice fish with what you are happy with !
ive a theory that penn mags are bought by anglers who want the 44 magnum of the multi world and think that turning the handles a chore penn should do something about
therefore any claim that penn make or its fans even , about superior build quality and bomb proofing is put to the test and ultimately the reels will fail like most would , this all stems from marketing them as tough reels and inviting missuse
i wouldnt touch one myself as they are grossly overpriced imho
It's true that there have been a few threads here from people experiencing mag or screaming problems with their 525's. It's also true that there have been threads here from people regarding problems with reels from every conceivable manufacturer. Personally, I wouldn't really expect the 525 mag/supermag/mag xtra/supermag xtra to have a track record of 100% problem free due to the sheer volume that are sold. I have both an original 525 mag and a supermag which I use weekly and have done for nearly two years. Both reels have performed faultlessly since coming out of the box and both still look like they have just come out of the box too. Questionable build quality? You're joking, they're built like tanks.
I suppose that after reading about problems with ABU 6500's, I could brand them as the worst reel available, but since I have never owned or even tried one, I don't think that would be fair.
G
I have reels from abu, daiwa and penn and they all have a purpose . I find the 525 absolutely useless for plugging and the abu is rubbish for lifting rays up a 20 foot cliff
