Picked up this reel from a charity shop, being a 6500 and saying "made in sweden" i thought i would be onto a winner. It spins ok.

Although i have got multi reels, all i do is wipe them clean and oil them occasionally. I do not know the insides of one

How do i check that this is ok on the inside, should i take off the end plate and have a look in.
To be honest i wouldn't know what to look for.

Does it have breaks, if so how many?
Where are they?
Should i fit some if there are none?
Should i remove the level wind mechanism, if so , how?

I am wondering as i write this, if i should have bought it!

You'll never get the best out of a multiplier if you never learn (at the least) to take the sideplate off, and add lubrication to the vital bits, and make adjustments to the braking system.

This site has many tutorials, and this one may be of use ..

There are a lot of these picture sequences on line and that particular one is one of the best I've seen. You really should have a go at the reel. Warning though - pimping Abus can become addictive if you're as sad as me...
