I could not sleep well last night so on the spur of the moment i decided to do a bit of fishing (5am.) I knew the tide would be ebbing fast so i jumped into the car and made it into the harbour in double quick time,(glad there were no police around.) Parked up and ran across to the boat.(well it was a quick shuffle realy.)by the tlme i had the boat fired up and the ropes off it was touch and go wheter i got down channel or not. I touched the weed on the bottom twice but i made it. all i had to do now was play dodge the creel ends for half an hour or so till it got light enough to see properly. After a slow trip down the bay it was light enough to try for some mackerel for bait, the wee fellas obliged again and soon had enough to do for the day, On with the cod gear.i was going to start with a 6oz lead head and a black jeltek twintail lure mounted on it,18 inch.above that i had a flier with 4/0 varivas semi circle hook for mackerel belly stripes, these hooks are smaller than standered j hooks and they get such a good grip that i was having to use pliers to get some of them out, not to good on fish that i wanted to return i am going to remove the barbs on some and try that, Well first drop straight into a cod of about 2lb, i thought YES good day coming up...well in the next 2hrs i caught 1 more cod about 3lb and a baby ling, they all went back to discuss there near death experience. I was pretty fed up by this time and as it was now low tide i got the kettle on and sat down for a wee while untill the tide started to flood. Got some fresh bait on and dropped it in, thats when the sh-t hit the fan,i dont know where they came from or what turned them on but every drop it was one and two beutifully conditioned cod, i kept what i wanted for myself and started returning the rest, i am sure if i had kept fishing i could have filled the boat, well after a while at that i called it quits and packed up to head for home (knackered.) So a surprisingly good day for this time of year.
