... What exactly are codling? Are they just small Cod? Just asking because I caught some last night, or at least thats what I think they are and am wondering if they are good to eat if I catch any more.

Cheers

Cheers guys,

I thought codling would be unlikely too, so as i'm no expert in fish ID, I took a photo, to check out later, and yep they are codling for sure, and at a guess (didn't measure them) around legal size, although they went free to swim another day.

Just for the info I was fishing a rock mark into deep water at night if it makes any difference.

Cheers again!

to get into the Sea Angler COD Club a some years ago you had to land from the shore a cod 6lb+ to get membership , supply a photo etc..
if you cought it in a boat it had to be 10lb+ (easy to catch from a boat with fish finders wrecks and reefs underneath you)
i got membership with the nine pound COD i cought , off battery point beach bristol channel (see my photos).
YOURS was good catch for this time of year , get down to the bristol channel in january -feb when its very cold and land a double figure cod off the beaches or Cleavdon pier not uncommon :1a:

spiky :fish:

There are loads of codling of the cornish coast this summer for some reason, so no reason there wouldn't be some off the welsh coast. Had loads recently, all in deepish water at dusk or after dark. Even had one hit a floated sandeel intended for mackerel.

Very unlikely to be codling this time of year if you fished from the beach. Have a look at some pictures of whiting and pout, more probable.
Ian
there was a codling of 40cms caught in cork(ireland) the other night at a comp. lots of smaller ones too. they just seem to never have gone away. ive gotten more in 1 night in june of this year than i did for the whole of the previous year. granted, they were all small, but still codling.
