Hi WSF,
I was planning on fishing at the Aberystwyth stone jetty for a few hours this summer with a small jig.
If you could give me an idea of what I might expect to catch it would be much appreciated
Thanks

Seaward side very tackle hungry at short range but cleaner at distance. Direct off the end into the mouth of harbour entrance puts you in deep water and not so snaggy.
Gets bit too crowded for me there in summer. Consider the steep shingle beach just south of the pier too.

Can you fish off the pier?
Yes but watch it in a bit of wind, i was on there once when from literally nowhere a wave broke straight over the top of me and the lad i was with. We immediately set off back and didn't make it far when another wave did the same thing-when i turned round my mate was gone. The sea was nowhere near the level we were fishing at, these waves came from literally nothing. My mate was getting sucked under the water and smashed into the side of the pier when I noticed he still had my tripod in his hand. I shouted to hold it up and somehow dragged him up the side of it-he was a bit of a mess and cut up fairly bad. I don't take chances with the sea and this was the worst i've seen so be a bit careful on there.

Sound like you were both very lucky but especially your mate!

That happened off the old Victorian pier, or the stone jetty's /breakwaters by the harbour?

Quite amazing that, you are a long way up from the high tide mark even on springs, wouldnt want to fall down the seaward side, straight onto rocks.
Always preferred fishing Tany beach anyways.

I grew up in Aber. Species wise you can get corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, shanny (common Blenny), tompot Blenny, shore rockling, Three bearded rockling, mackerel, garfish, bass, pollack, poor cod. To find a lot of these you have to fish into the boulders in the first 20 yards around the jetty and use small hooks size 4-8. Yes you will lose tackle, but that's where the fish are.

At range on the clean ground casting S or SW you can get dogfish, bull huss, tub gurnard, dab. On the harbour side there are flounder and eel.

A good variety of bait helps to target a range of species. Worm is difficult to get locally, but rag does find the species. Prawn from the rock pools is a good bait.
Many of these fish will take lures.

Beware of waves breaking over the jetty if a swell is running. A calm day with a swell can still get waves breaking over the end.

Look here as well. https://www.seaanglersguide.com/features/fishing-aberystwyth-stone-jetty/

And look at the South & West Wales forum on wsf which covers the Aberystwyth area.

I have found that if you cast forward you can take the occasional pollock, cast to your right and its more likely to be mackerel. the weed can be a nuisance, try a lure or maybe feathers. good luck
