Adjusting multiplier brakes

562 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  essexkenny
When watching videos of good casters, I see them adjusting the brakes on their multipliers during the cast.
Are they apply the brakes to stop birds nest or taking brakes off to achieve more distance?
Cheers

They are using magged reels and are reducing the braking by winding the mags off during the cast .

Absolute control over (multiplier) reel spool speed is the key requirement for distance on the field. The most consistent method to achieve this, is by “magnetic control” of spool reaction (surge) in the initial stage, and adjusting the magnetic influence over line flow in the middle and and final stages of the cast.

A caster capable of emptying a spool will find the spool accelerating near the final stages, and with line feeding from an ever decreasing diameter, it will hold the cast back unless it is extremely free running. Backing off the "mags" all the way allows this. Centrifugal brakes come on hard at the end of a cast and can’t be adjusted mid flight, which is why adjustable “mags” are preferred.

Centrifugal brakes are good enough for fishing though, as this refined level of tuning is rarely needed on the beach.

Agree with the "adjust during the cast" bit completely. I had a penn 515 that a long time ago now, i modded the mag knob to able to do just that as you describe. Paced out in a field it gave a little more distance, but not a huge amount. So after a while i put it back as it original was.
Re the centifugal vs mag brakes though, one benefit you have with mag brakes is the ability to tweak the braking in instances such as wind direction changes and strengths. Ie a wind turning from blowing sideway on to you, to blowing straight towards you, you can change the braking to suit (if that makes sense?)
