If you want to fish Southend beaches the main bait is crab. The casino as Westcliff has the best chace for a decent bass. The bass tend to come in very close there and you don't need to cast past the leisure centre.
The 2nd place would be behing Peter's Pans fairground and aim for the legs of the pier, it will be crabby but you would be in for a chance of a bass.
From the pier to Shoebury common beach you would be plagued by schoolie bass with the odd chance of a flounder or an eel.
Shoebury East Beach especially by the boom (park your car in Blackgate Road and walk past the army barracks to the beach) can throw up a few decent fish but you get less fishing time.
finally barge pier at Shoebury will throw up flounders from the end with the chance of a bass near the legs but again its crab city. Also don't forget your wellies as you have to walk past a fence that goes into the sea from either the common or east beach.

Hi delboy. get the train up tp the pier head. Hopefully be plenty of mackerel and garfish on feathers or float tackle. Use crab, live joey mackerel or mack head and guts down amongst the piles for bass.

Oh yes, will get good advice from southend angling centre or jetty anglers, both on the seafront. Good luck mate.

There are places nearer to London than Southend. there is the worlds end pub at Tilbury where you park in the car park and walk up half a dozen steps to fish.
As for the pier the local paper said loads of mackeral were caught there last week.
If you are after bait fishing instead of feather fishing then you need crabs for the southend area and worm bait (mainly lug and maddies for the Tilbury area).
Wherever you go good luck and I hope both your dad and you have a good day
