Hi, I recently brought an akios tourno of Facebook, the reel was in immaculate condition. I have used the reel a few times along side the new one I brought. On a recent session the main pinion gear decided to blow when I wound down to pull my lead out some clay.
Iv ordered a replacement gear set of the akios website, both pinion gear and main, but cant seem to get it working correctly, every time I try turn the handle with my thumb on the spool the gears grind/slip. Iv tried my other gears from my other reel and they work fine.
When turning the big cog with my finger and the side plate cover off its like the two gears don't align very well unlike the other reel.
Is there anything I'm potentially missing.
Thanks in advance.

Whats a main pinion?

I'm assuming you've purchased gears from the Akios Superstore which is NOT actually Akios but a separate company ... your better off speaking to Peter Coogan the Akios service agent on 07740 306500 for technical advice (what pete doesn't know isn't worth knowing). Peter can also supply the complete range of Akios parts.

If you have purchased a set of stainless gears they are going to be quite "agricultural" and noisy for a while as its a hard metal and takes a while to "run in". I'd also make sure you oil the contact points between spindle and the inside of the pinion gear very regularly as stainless pinion gears have a habit of welding themselves to the spindles at that point. Rocket reel Co went over to phosphor bronze pinion gears to cure that issue.

Just to add ... there are 2 different gear sets for the Akios reels ... I would check that you have ordered/received the correct set as its possible that you have the wrong set?

Tried ringing him multiple times today and no joy! I will have to try again tomorrow.

The gears are just standard brass 5.3 ones. With the reel assembled when you turn the handle it is very noisy and feels rough, unlike my other one.

Unfortunately the receipt I received doesn't say which one I have ordered, but I'm pretty sure it must be the right one otherwise the rod the spool sits on wouldn't insert into the small gear.
I did consider that maybe they had sent me the left handed version but the teeth run in the same direction as the old gears.

I will have to ring and hope Peter answers tomorrow

You'll need a bit of patience with Peter as he is always busy!

As far as I am aware the pinion gear centres are the same on both types of gears so the spindle theory may well be flawed ... they also seem to give you a choice of sets for various models in the brass gears so the wrong set would still be a possibility. Surely the supplier would know what was ordered?

sounds like have the faster gear pinion with the lower geared main drive so creates a non meshing gap?
Do you have a vernier gauge? can use to check overall sizes of each.
Also check is pinion moving and sitting correctly as change from out to in gear? As you get that effect if pinions not locating correctly plus is end machined correctly?

Mind are gear sets being sourced from you know who! So will be made with Unbotainium for UBER rough Ground use!

The gears definitely look different to my old akios reel considering they both are supposedly the same gear ratio.

Now I think about it, when I had the sideplate cover off if I span the main gear and they did run together the yoke was trying to pop up. I guess that this was the pion gear trying to climb as it rotated.
