You will probably be put off lure fishing forever with a £35 rod, baitcaster and Rapalas mate. Have a go anyway but dont think for a minute that this set up will be much use for shore fishing the UK coast. If I were you I would buy the rod whilst in the states, they have a huge selection of baitcaster style rods over there and even for £35 you'll get a good one.

Having just bought the Abu Ruby Crest for £36 I and a few others that have tried it, have been quite impressed and far from being put off I am now enjoying lure fishing more than before.

As time goes on I am sure I will spend more money on lure rods etc, but for just starting out I cannot fault an investment of £36

Hi Dan,

You might like to check out some of the replies I got to this thread. Bottom of page 1 and most of page 2.

Some people are using baitcasters with success. If you have already got the reel then why not give it a go. It could make catching mackerel more fun.

As for baitcasters, you might need to check out the pike fishing section of shops. Harris sportsmail have a few.

The Savage Gear rods are popular around here and the Butch Light might suit your needs. Might have to increase your budget though.

The fashion around here is for 7'-9' fast action spinning rods with 4000 size spinning reels and braid.

I hope that this helps.

Tones.

I have a Butch Light and consider the casting weight rating to be a little light - it will handle up to 100g easily...:eek:hmy:

As the OP was suggesting a rod for 7-28g (ish), I would suggest looking at the BushWhacker or Boner from Savage Gear.
