Sea anglers lead fight to restore Sussex kelp forests
A new bylaw has been approved to prohibit trawling year-round in more than 100 square miles of seabed off Sussex. The bylaw aims to facilitate the recovery of kelp forests and improve fisheries. The sea angling community in Sussex played a key role in the public consultation process and support the ban on trawling in this area.
Survey for sea anglers targeting all UK shark species
There is still time to take part in a a new survey for recreational sea anglers targeting all UK shark species, from smaller species such as dogfish to larger species like blue sharks. The survey was launched through a new collaborative partnership with the Angling Trust, the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain and researchers at the Bournemouth University and the University of York.
Next Sea Angling Forum: an evening with Southern IFCA
Join us online on Thursday 22nd April, 7-8.30pm, for the third in a series of free virtual Sea Angling Forums with IFCA's from around the English coastline - but hurry, spaces are limited! Taking part is the Southern IFCA and we will be joined by its Chief Officer, Ian Jones, who will be outlining his role and that of his team, discussing how they would like to build closer relationships with sea anglers and taking questions from our audience.
Positive feedback for our sea angling events
Feedback from earlier sea angling forums has been overwhelmingly positive with an 80-90% approval from attendees of both the IFCA-based and the Shark-themed events. The move to a webinar-based approach has similarly been positively received with only occasional technical issues now being reported by attendees after some initial challenges. Postings of the forums for later viewing via the Angling Trust website has helped anyone with technical issues to catch up. These versions of the forums have been hugely popular and viewed on nearly 800 occasions already.
Join Anglers Against Pollution
Sewage and plastic pollution are suffocating our waterways and oceans, and smothering our beaches. Pledge your support in the fight for cleaner waters today.
Fish of the month: Plaice
Plaice are most commonly caught by shore anglers between now and September after spending winter months in deeper water out at sea to spawn. When the sea temperature begins to warm up in the spring, plaice move into shallower inshore water. The first plaice to arrive are often skinny and undernourished, but will be keen to take a bait and will feed on a variety of food sources. As the summer goes on plaice will fatten up and become more selective about the food they take. During the spring and summer months plaice are often found in estuaries and, being a flatfish, plaice prefer sandy or muddy seabeds.
Plaice are highly valued as a food fish. Along with cod and haddock they are the fish most commonly used in the classic British dish of fish and chips and are a regular feature on the menus at restaurants and pubs.
