I am really enjoying the bass forum - thank you. I am new to the forum and based in South Devon. Been fly fishing for trout for many years and fly fished for bass in the past with some success but not been out often. I now want to have more of a go with lures. I have had a Normark Ed Schliffke Bass Plugger rod for years and have now loaded my reel with mono backing and finished with Whiplash 8 24lbs braid. I intend to use a mono leader - do you guys just tie on the lures like I do with trout flies or do you use clips of some sort please?
I am wanting to try Broadsands Beach, Elbury Cove, Churston Cove and around there - am I wasting my time or are there bass to be caught there please?

Yea breakaway mini clip for me too, there are some lures it wont play nicely with ie the bib gets in the way so i tend to use the bigger one as that is easier for me. After a while you get the feel for them.

I also like the delande twist clip things but they are hard to find. HTO do one as well but breakaway is probably the best option.

I dont know those marks but they look bassey to me. 👍

Welcome fellow Devonian! 😁😁

I have never been a fan of Braid on my beach gear (endless wind knots) but recently tried it on my lure gear and it is much better. I often use Savage Gear Seekers & Surf Seekers, and on a recent trip, had a lot of trouble with Braid line twist & tangles on my reel. Having looked into it further, when the SG Seekers are worked 'sink & draw', they are desined to rotate 360 degrees on the drop, so are possibly putting twists in the line. Some other lures may do the same.
From now on, I shall ensure I have a small swivel clip on the front of the lures to hopefully prevent this happening. Everyone to their own, and I help this helps! 👍👍

Limited use, IMO, because it is easier to twist braid than it is to turn a swivel, when both under tension?

Without a vane or a suitable anti twist weight like the Wye only ball-bearing swivels actually work as we hope or imagine them to, and even then under heavy loads they often wont. In the heyday of salmon fishing with Devon minnows you would alter the direction of spin by changing lures hoping to counteract line spin. It worked to a degree but wasn't infallible

I think the manual bail closure just ensures there isnt a loose loop. You will occasionally get them even manually closing the bail. if you notice them then the next cast should be carefully dealt with.

Ive never had an issue with line twist in braid though. Seekers never cause me an issue either. Just wondering but do you fish one lure for prolonged periods. If im not catching i will change lures fairly reguarly so a seeker will get swapped for a soft or surface lure or even a flying C. Just wondering if that might be why i dont get line twist. (Famous last words, guess i should i look forward unpicking wind knots next trip out)
