baiting needle question

just bought a baiting needle for worm baits.please can someone tell me how to use it?its got a plastic sleeve over it wots that for?how do you get the worms over the barb of the hook without ripping them to bits:help:thanks.

The plastic sleave is just a holder. tape it to the leg of your tripod and you will always know where the needle is.

take your worms and pass the needle through their entire length. I prefer to feed the needle through he mouth of a ragworm and tail end of a lug. Use the blunt end of the needle. At the other end of the needle is a hole tube. Put the point of the hook in to that and keep the line taught along the length of the needle. Then just slide the worms up over the hook and ease them over the hook eye and knot

Hello mate,
Once you have tried them, you never go back. They do vary however. Lug need a blunt needle - point rounded off, and these can vary in thickness (wire gauge) and length. Big lug are better on a thicker / longer needle. By the way, put all bait onto the needle at once, ie 5 or 6 lug at a time, before inserting hook into hole on other end and sliding over hook.

Ragworm require a sharp needle - the blunted lug ones are no good.
