Think I'm ready to upgrade from my £20 starter combo, so I've been looking at at rods and reels. Does anybody know what the difference is between a beachcaster rod and a surf rod please......if any? I normally fish off a sandy beach or a pier.
Cheers,
Rob.

a surf rod is made to fish at short range, ie in the surf, for species such as bass or flatfish that feed in the surf zone. A beachcaster can handle bigger leads and baits and cast either close in or in the right hands 150yards plus and beyond. Your best all round option would be a beachcaster rated to cast 5 / 6oz leads, you could then fish at all ranges. Hope this helps mate.

hello mate, there a lot of different types of beach fishing rod's, especialy at the top end of the market and there are some beachcasters with the word 'surf' in the name which could possibly confuse people........ my idea of a surf rod is my greys bze that is rated to cast 3-5oz leads and i use it mainly for bass surf fishing....and i have a couple of different beachcasters for different types/ grounds/ conditions etc so i wouldn't worry to much about the words in the names of the hundreds of rod's there are out there because some of them can be misleading in my opinion.........you have already stated you mainly fish clean beaches which is a good start so if you list some other requirments you have i'm sure you will get a lot of good info and recomendations on here..... it sounds to me that you probably will want an 'all-round' rod that casts 4-6oz or 4-8oz at first and then go from there?........for example- whats your budget, do you use fixed spool or multiplier etc............the more info you put the easier it will be for people to help you mate......................also, you don't need to spend a fortune unless you want to, my biggest bass so far (6lb) was caught a few years ago on a 10ft rebel pier rod i paid about £25 for and since i have had my greys rod i havn't been able to beat it (almost):wiggle:....... hope some of this info helps in your quest, good luck

and as the next step from your starter kit look at the shakespeare salt combo with the mitchell 8000 reel advertised in this months sea angler by manwarings, cant go wrong for just under a ton all in.
Hmmmm.....I was looking in the glasgow angling centre fishing megstore mag that came with sea angler and was thinking more along the 50 quid sort of mark! But thanks for the info.

Rob not sure how much you want to pay but a couple of months ago I got an abu hellbender 16 foot from veals for £99 it was on special offer, its a beachcaster and is rated 3.5oz to 7oz
Not sure if they are still on offer or not.
Have been really happy with mine.
Got a diawa tripod more or less the same time as you need a decent extendable tripod for such a long rod.
Hope this helps

Hi, I'm not looking for anything too flash or expensive, but I think I may benefit from upgrading from my £20 e-bay special, made in Taiwan combo!! I've been fishing about 6 months now from sandy beaches and a pier. I use 5 and 6 oz leads and fixed spool.
To be honest I catch fish with present tackle but the reel sounds more like a ratchet when I wind in now and I might be able to cast further with a better rod!
I'm looking for a forgiving all rounder for about the 50 quid mark. I know it's not a lot but it's more about getting out and having some fun than a dead serious hobby at the moment.
Any advice welcome.
Cheers,

Rob.

personaly i don't think a £25 ebay combo to a £50 mail order combo will be an upgrade as for that sort of money the combos are going to be of a very similar standard and would be very surprised if it would improve any of your casting etc mate........ an upgrade from your combo will be like the 1 mentioned before for around £100 and there a few about if you have a look......try veals, mainwarings and gerry's for a start..........i wouldn't go for the combo's around £50 because they won't be any better than what you already have so maybe wait a bit longer until you want to spend a little bit more?........as for rod length, in my opinion 12 to 13'6 would be easier for you to get used to and distance is more about technique......am i wright in saying there has been no casting records broken with a rod longer than 14ft? all the big hitters use rod's around 13ft i'm sure?...........

I agree with SaltyD40 about the prices Rob, you get what you pay for.
I bought cheap and regretted it, ok on the length of rods your probably right but it has made a difference to my casting but am only a mediocre caster anyway.
Rob if you want to meet up sometime you could try my rods.

The far better option would be for you to try a few either at tackle shops or talk to others at Maryport/Silloth or where ever.

Note though:
There is something that always comes into play and thats personal preference!!

eg: I bought new, quite a decent Okuma Magnetix MG-30LS multiplier used it a few times and just can't get used to it, am now gonna try and advertise it in the classified on here.

have a look at the classfieds on here mate for decent used kit at good prices. i would recommend a mid range second hand rod and reel over a cheap new set any day mate. with the amount of tackle tarts on here there is always good second hand kit changing hands for next to nothing.

Hi,

I can get a shakespeare tidewater and a fisheagle sea bay for £41

ron thompson zensorflex and okuma razor 65 for £40

ron thompson nautilus and okuma beachcaster for £50

daiwa d and reel for £55

ron thompson stratocaster and okuma beachcaster 80 for £60

Surely these must be better than a completely unbranded make? There isn't one identifying mark on either my rod or reel and like I said the reel sounds like a port cullis going up when I wind in now, so I'll have to buy something!!
I really know nothing about rods or reels..... do any of the above sound like they might do for a guy who's just stepped up from the first rung of the sea fishing ladder?

Many thanks,

Rob

sorry Rob, i can't comment on these as i have no experience with any of them, as the man said though, personal preference is key realy, if you don't want to go higher than that and don't get any more info on the above then pick the 1 you like the look and sound of and take the plunge, good luck fella

a standard bechcaster, 12ft to 13ft and 2 piece, which in my personal opinion can be used for all kinds of sea fishing.

surf rods are commonly 14ft to 16ft + and 3 piece with more sensitive bite detection than a normal beachcaster, i tend to find, can cast a very long ways for short or long range fishing, i find the better surf rods to be 3 to 7 oz

i use a 15ft grauvell teknos 4500x and old penn 75 surfmaster, stay clear of the new versions, i dnt use a shockleader as i can chuck it out 150yds with not much effort.

the grauvells are superb, can handle large cod and can detect the slightest nibble.

hope this helps

If you're happy with the rod, spend the £50 budget on a reel

sorry to hijack your post,
i'm thinking of getting the new Abu Hellbender Surf rod, (recently reviewed in Sea Angler mag ) . I'm confused now, as it states in the name is this a pure surf rod or can i use it for beachcasting ? all the online shops have it in the beachcaster rod sections.
