Well the mrs wants her own rod for when I take her out occasionally to do a bit of float fishing or spinning.

I thought I would work it to my advantage and get something that I could also use when she isn't with me.

Originally I thought this should be a travel rod, but after thinking about it for a while I have realised that with 3 young kids we are unlikely to be getting on a plane anytime soon and a small spinning rod will fit in the boot of the car anyways (which is the main reason I was thinking of a travel rod in the first place, for those moments when you take the family out for a nice drive and happen to arrive at a mark to see how it is fishing and everyone is on the fish but you have no gear!).

So now I am thinking of getting her a Boner, I already own the Bushwacker and I love it, so it seems a good idea to get a boner for those times where a slightly heavier casting weight is needed.

I also thought that the boner would be ideal for the mrs to do a bit of float fishing for mackys and pollack, spinning with toby/dexters and even some light ledgering tight into harbour walls for some wrasse.

So the question is, does anyone know where the best deal is currently available on the Boner?

I know Garry Evans does it for around £66 delivered with a free Okuma baitcasting reel, but I have a strong suspicion that my mrs might need my Shimano Technium 4000FB, meaning I may be forced to upgrade to something like a Twinpower and I really don't want another reel I will never use hanging around. So I would prefer to get a cheaper cash deal then extras thrown in.

Also, my plan would be to keep either the Bushwacker or the Boner in the boot of the car, however I think it would need a hardcase to protect it from the shopping, pushchairs etc that often get thrown in. Does anyone know of such a thing that would suit a 2 piece 8'6" rod?

Cheers for any help you can give me.

Buy the kids rods take them fishing leave her home and enjoy the day with your kids
I would love nothing more but unfortunately my 2 youngest are too young and my eldest has a disability that makes taking him fishing impossible at best.

Anyways I don't mind taking her occassionally as it helps her see why my list of angling wants, never ever gets smaller, lol.

Hi Leeder,

I think i read on here that Gary Evans will do this deal with a fixed spool also if that's any use.

Cheers

Hywel
Thanks for that, I'll give him a ring and see what he can do.

Unless anyone knows of any better deals?

Hello again Leeder,

Cheshire Fishing's website lists the Boner at £47.99 + £6.50 for delivery.

http://www.cheshirefishing.co.uk/shop/savagear/rods.htm

What length and weight Bushwhacker do you have? Would you recommend it? How has it coped with saltwater use? Any corrosion on the rings?

Check out the travel rod thread for some of my thoughts on them.

Smart thinking about getting the wife involved. Mine has expressed an interest too, suggesting that a second rod and reel could be useful. Bonus!

All the best.

Tony.

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for the link, I shall give them a call tomorrow to check out their stock situation.

The Bushwacker I have is the 8'6" (10g-40g casting weight one), I absolutely love it.

I will be honest with you though, I only purchased it in the beginning of June from MrFish and it is my first ever plugging rod.

I purchased it based on reviews that I have read on here and due to the fact that I couldn't justify spending big money on a red rod, with the risk that I may not even like plugging.

I have used it a number of times now and I am more than happy with it, I can cast it well, it is easy to use when working the lures and most importantly it landed my first ever lure caught bass (4lb 14oz) with ease.

My Bushwacker still looks pretty much like it did the day it arrived, however that was only a couple of months ago, so it is too early to tell. I do try to look after all my gear and do give it a rinse off in the shower after use, so hopefully that should keep any corrosion at bay for a while.

My only gripe is that when I am wading and the line gets caught around the tip of the rod, it is just a bit too long to comfortably get to the tip to sort out the line and I have to be extra careful not to submerge the base of my rod and the reel into the water. At these times I wonder if the 7' Bushwacker would of been better. This however is really only a problem when it is dark and I can't see the tip of the rod properly and to be honest this is normally because I am fishing a lot longer than I should because I love it too much and can't bare to stop.

I guess really it comes down to budgets, for me I don't regret buying my Bushwacker for a minute and as a novice plugger, I would buy the same again if I had to make the same decision.

Hi Leeder,

Thanks for the reply. That's the model that I'm considering. I probably should have put that question in the 'baby bushwhacker' thread. Sorry everyone.

Think cheep.
Keep the rod inside a length of plastic drainpipe in the boot to protect it.
Great thinking, I have a spare bit of downpipe in the shed, but would never of thought of using it.

Cheers!

Hello again Leeder,

Cheshire Fishing's website lists the Boner at £47.99 + £6.50 for delivery.

http://www.cheshirefishing.co.uk/shop/savagear/rods.htm

After a bit more searching this morning, I couldn't beat this price, so I gave them a ring to check availability and confirm price. I was told that they were £59.99, which left me disappointed.

I then thought 'sod it' and telephoned to complain that their website said they were £47.99 +P&P, a different person answered and said "yes sir, they have just gone on special".

So I have just ordered one for £54.49 delivered, saving me over a tenner, which can go towards another plug, ideal.

So thanks again Tony.

You're welcome Leeder. I've spent ages trawling the net looking for good bass plugging gear at good prices recently and haven't bought a thing. I'm just glad that someone has benefited from it. This forum has been very useful in helping me to understand what fishing is all about, so it's nice to be able to contribute now and again. I hope that you and the wife enjoy your sessions together.

All the best,

Tony.

Just a quick update to say great service from Chesirefishing, ordered the rod at 1pm yesterday and it arrived at 10am this morning.

No messing around.

Now I just have to resist christening it before the mrs does, hehe.

That's good to hear leeder, I'm thinking about ordering a Roadrunner from them. After speaking to Mr Fish I've decided against the Bushwhacker and am trying to decide between the Quantum Energy Bass and the new Sakuras. Not sure I can wait any longer.

I hope that your Boner gives your wife lots of pleasure!

Good luck to you both.

Tony.
