I've spent a bit of time this evening reading a few of the stickies and threads.

Going to buy myself a spinning rod, which is the easy bit. There just seems a massive amount of different types of lures/plugs to pick from. I know people's choices are down to where they fish and personal preference but are there some basic tried and tested lures that should be purchased at the outset to cover off?

I will be looking to fish Loughor Estuary, as well as trying a few gower marks from the rocks etc.

Also wondering if bait fishing from shore with one rod, whether it's practical to use the spinning rod at same time with lure depending on conditions?

I bought myself a couple of Flying C's the other day but the rest seems a minefield.

Savage gear sandeel in real pearl.. 12.5cm model. I used to bait fish and lure at the same time and is ok.. but with lure fishing you move around a lot. If you don't catch within 10-20 mins you need to move. Bait fishing your kinder committed to the one spot.

Look out for "Dexter - Strike pro" lures
These are top quality at budget price and will ofted outfish more expensive Japanese lures.
Also look for "jelly worm" soft type lures, Sluggos are a good start.
Soft lures are very effective and cheap when you loose them.
Look up on Google "Texas rig" and "Carolina rig" to get you started.

Just make sure you have a couple of dexters, Tobys, and if you can find any a couple of original Kosters and then fill your boots with the modern ones as funds allow. As said the Savage gears are good and I also like the black Eddystones. You'll end up with loads but wont use half of them. And before I forget, if all else fails make sure you have a chug bug handy.:whistling

A chug bug is a surface popper, makes a big splash as you retrieve.

WiggleStick (from Glasgow Angling) is a good cheapo. As several have said, SavageGear sandeels are good, and Toby (I like 20g) is a big winner.

As to using the same rod in surf and for lures, I have the 11 foot Mike Ladle (Veals). In a light surf, this is fine; so I sometimes fish bait in the surf till the hour before dawn, then move to the rocks for the lures. But in a bigger surf -- say over about 4 foot of wave -- it won't cast a big enough lead. For baitfishing I use a Shakespeare Tidewater Bass, £22 fro Glasgow Angling. I have tried poncier rods, but keep coming back to the Tidewater.

Cheers all for the very useful tips. All noted and will start to purchase!

Leaky - didn't actually mean the same rod, just to bait and lure fish at same time, but will check that rod out

Stupid question, with that wigglestick (and I guess other lures) how do you attach new hooks?
