Hello folks,

On holiday soon down near helston and want to target Bass, Wrasse, Mackerel and flatties.

Ive heard praa is ok for bass but where can I go for some Wrasse sport, mackerel on feathers/lures and flatties.

Any advice on marks and tactic would be greatfully received as I am a complete novice at sea fishing and trying to learn as much as possible before my holiday (plus I have to justify to the mrs why I have spent the money on a load of beach fishing gear!).

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi Silverfish,

Great stuff, thanks for the info and kind reply....I will certainly enjoy it down there fish or not, rain or sun but landing a few would be the icing on the cake.

I will look into Prussia cove, Praa etc and give them a whirlonce ive picked up bait and tide timetable from Newtown Angling which is literally a mile or so from where we are based.

Thanks again and tight lines

Hi buddy

Try the rocks around Porthcurno, lots of small pollock and wrasse there. Maybe need to use small hardbacks to pick out better fish....

For the bass, especially the better ones, here's the advice I share with a lot of visiting fishers, most of whom are blanking at the time: fish close in. In a light surf, 10-30 yards is plenty. In a really foamy surf, when there is a ton of stirred-up sand in the water, might need to cast 40-odd yards. I run into lots of folk who are wading past the fish, then chucking their baits half-way to the Scillies.
Also, I find I do best if my weight is JUST heavy/grippy enough to ALMOST hold bottom. In a rough sea, I use a 4oz pyramid. In a normal sea, a 3oz flattie weight or a 3oz rolling ball. I use a wired lead about twice a year, when spring tides coincide with a gale of wind. I get a lot more takes if the bait is moving about a bit.
Finally, bass are most active between twilight and dawn. On a sunny day, go after the wrasse or the mackerel.
By the way, I do not fish for wrasse, but I catch a fair few by accident, while lure-fishing for bass. When I twitch a plastic worm along the bottom, they seem to just love it. You lose a few worms this way, but they're fairly cheap anyway. As the other chaps have said, Prussia Cove (and surrounding area) is good for wrasse.

Thanks chaps,

Leakyboots, I have flattened off a few leads and intend to move a few baits into gutters etc for the bass close in, holding the rod in hand. Never tried this tactic but it sounds very similar to rolling meat for barbel which is an absolute killer tactic if you get it right, feeling for plucks is exciting too compared to watching a tip.

Ive also got a wide selection of lures to have a play around with and will certainly give the soft plastics some swimming time!

Thanks again, getting very excited for this trip!

Great stuff Fisherman 2, id be happy with any Wrasse but one of 6lb would be of mind blowing proportions! By the way, if anyone wants to PM me stuff rather than risk our friends from eastern Europe finding info out that is fine, though I have a bit to go at already.

I will post any pics I get of any fish caught and if I am jammy enough to get a bass of any size, id like to get a shot of the release back to the sea for the album and any wrasse with their amazing colours!

For wrasse, will limpits catch well?

Thanks guys, great forum for novices like me who are trying to learn
