Out last night ,first since Christmas Eve,fished 8 till midnight.nothing for the first hour and a half then 4 codling 4.5,6,7.25 and2.5lb then nothing more same thing happened last time I tried that mark all fish caught around two hours after high tide in exactly the same spot. Bait was cart wing on a piece of mackerel. One thing last night all the fish swallowed the baits backwards the pennel hook was in the gut and the main hook was at the front of the mouth, all the fish had empty stomachs maybe that’s the explanation.Don’t normally use a pennel hook but was using larger than normal baits about 4in by 2in last night as casting distance was not far ,40yds ample.

Great effort mate, well done. Surprises a lot of folk how close to the shoreline the cod will hunt for food when conditions are favourable. Looks like some decent northerly weather for the next few days so hope to read more cracking reports from you. Keep up the good work!

When I first started winter cod fishing I always looked for deeper water but most off the marks I fish now are shallow ,2or 3 fathom ,cod don’t seem to mind feeding in broken water
I was fishing a local mark a few years back just before dark, hit a big slack liner and as I tightened onto the fish it's tail came out of the water, I reckon it was in water no more than 3 feet deep, nice too it was a 5 punner.

If the mark I'm fishing is a filling gulley or I'm fishing in a kelp bed, I fish it as soon as there's water in it, as has been said Cod do seem to come close to the shore to find food. When I first came to live near Arbroath I soon found out that I was casting way too far, though if fishing two rods I do still chuck one out a bit further. One of the best cages on Arbroath harbour dries out at low tide, you can fish it half up the tide and half back down, so again you are fishing less than 6 metres at high water and probably less than half that at half tide.

I‘ve certainly been guilty off overcasting but have now realised distance on most marks I fish is not needed especially at night.Never fished the Arbroath area ,by the looks of things in can get pretty busy when conditions are good so I’ll stick to down this way as if I see another angler it’s a surprise 🤣

Well done sir, that’s a quality cod - pity the sea wasn’t a bit more lively.
