Black lug for cod

Hi

Too many people are putting up catch reports for their bag-up cod sessions for me to resist going out to join them.

I've never really targeted cod before so wanted some advice. It's well established the blighters can't resist the black lug but I have no idea how much to get. How many will you normally get through over a decent length codding session? Frankly they're far from cheap so it's good to get an idea of how many I'll need first.

Also, how do people normally present them? People talk about putting them on 4/0 hooks for cod but I've always been taught that your hook should match the size of the bait, and that'd be a heck of a worm to fill up a hook that big.

Cheers

All depends on how long a sesh your going for ? And if the whiting are about.

For a average 48 hr sesh on Chesil or dungy il get through about 100 black lug.

Get a black lug bend in half whip it together jobs done then thread on your hook or get 2,3 black lug bend together whip and stick on your hook depending how big a bait u want
i used to use 30/40 a session using 2 rods. i always used a pennel pully rig, 3/0-4/0 hooks. it doesnt matter if they are fresh blacks or frozen. i used to prepare mine at home, get 1 or 2 black lug, fold them over and bind them with a decent amount of bait elastic. i use to try and get 5/6 baits per 10 black lug. after doing this id freeze them down. some times id add a squid or strip or cuttle and bind that in with the black lug. or id tip the bait of with abit of squid when im out fishing. after doing a few they looked like this.

You just need a sweet chilli and garlic dip with those, they look delish:clap3:
its a big debate tbh some love to pile them on others use then singly, on a calm-medium day i will fold 3-5 large black lug in half and bind with elastic then take half a palm sized cuttle and bind that around it, on the rougher days bigger more scenty baits are needed but if its very windy i try to streamline these as much as possible... on marks needing distance a single worm and good cast can out catch the bigger baits in close, the real answer is to play around with it, see what others are usings and how far they are casting etc dont forget some days 2or3 whole squid or cuttle will out fish the lug baits, somtimes a single crab will pick them out... learn your beach and study your weather =] regards to hook size, i wouldnt worry if your well clear, i now use a minimum of 5/0 even with a single worm, youl find your hook up rates allot better with the bigger hooks much like bass...
