Beach casting multiplier

blob knot on 60lbs mono or tapered leader.

When using a shock leader I have been advised a blob knot which is essence a light flame heated 60lbs mono with your main line whipped to it in the same way a spade end hook is tied is just as good as using a more expensive tapered shock leader.
anyone used this method.
I have just tried the knot it appears safe enough and the light bulbous melted end would slip through the rings no problem.
tight lines

whilst the blob not is ideal for field casting i wouldnt bother with it for fishing.
have a look around there are much better knots to use in a fishing situation, the blob not will let you down if you have to pull out of a heft or even just trying to get it off the bottom.

I use a blob knot on the casting field. Wouldn't dream of doing so for fishing, just wouldn't have the confidence that a decent fish (or a slight snag) will result in the uni-knot slipping over the end of the shockleader.

I'm happy enough with the tapered leaders - leaves a nice small knot, doesn't attract too much weed and means you have a decent length of strong line for comfort when bringing a decent fish through the surf.

Surely if the blob knot was trustworthy on the beach then, like many of the innovations that have come off the tournament field it would be used much more often? I think the fact that it is not says a lot about how reliable a knot it would be given the rigours we put our terminal tackle through on the beach.

I used to use the blob knot for fishing on my local clean surf beach ...on the odd occasion I have ended up over the rocks and hit a snag... it's always been the shock lead knot that gives up first ...changed to more conventional knot after about the third time as I would hate to loose a decent fish just for sake of using a knot designed to help casters split the horizon ..particularly when all I need is a half decent 80 yard lob into the surf.

Havn't tried the improved Albright http://www.leadertec.com/tipsandtechniques/fishing_knots/knots_imp_albrt.htmlyet but might give it a go next time I put a new shock lead on

I totally agree ,the spider hitch is a far stronger knot and easy to tie
