New here, so hello folks...........

Been a long time away from sea angling having spent most of the last few years on the coarse ponds. I now want to get back to boats and inshore fishing (no more than 3 miles of torbay)..................... today I will look at this, it is said to be a shetland style, but not a shetland!, any views on suitability ?

Hi GPSGuru and welcome to the forum.....

Your boat looks to have a lazy Vee hull and even at 3 x nm off the land the weather can get quite bad....

The Boat that you have purchased should do you fine with a cabin to sit in if it is pi$$ing down but make sure that your boat has all of the ness safety equipment aboard .....and in time if you find that you have got right into Boat Fishing and are ready to upgrade you should have more of an idea of your own of what type of craft would suit yourself and if you keep going to the WSF regulary it may help you with any future decisions as to what craft in the future that you may buy....

Hi, gpsguru. Welcome.

I'd second KB's comment. What engine power has she got & what is the LOA?

Thanks Guys,

I haven’t bought it yet. I went to look today and it looks reasonably tidy for a 1982 vessel……… no cracks in the transom and the hull looks rigid and straight.

LOA is 18ft ..................

It is powered by a Johnson 70 that looks well maintained and has been recently serviced by the local main dealer. It also has a Johnson 6 auxiliary engine.

I have suggested a price that is well below the asking price and subject to a sea trial (not that I am fussy !)....... it didnt rasie any eyebrows so I guess i am in the right area.

However, I will probably be looking at a Task Force 550 (Johnson 90 powered) in the next couple of days, then I guess its ‘make a decision’ time.

Hi and welcome to the forum mate.

The boat is a little old but looks very good condition for the year, so should be fine especially if you have the confidence of a well serviced engine (check for proof!).

The Taskforce is a cracking boat, many commercial users would recommend, however a vastly different boat to the one pictured.

I my opinion, if you want an out and out fishing boat then the Taskforce will knock spots off the one shown, but if you wany ANY comfort then it wont be for you.

The taskforce will be faster, less comfort on the move and very little if any cabin comfort (most are open/small cuddy), but for fast offshore work, great build qaulity and duarbility the taskforce will stand the test, very stable at anchor too.

I would imagine the taskforce will look a little "rougher" and more "used" or painted gel coat etc, they do hold their money through repuatation so it will appear you are getting less for your money, but with a good 90HP - certainly quick enough.

I owned a Taskforce and it is a good, tough, out and out fishing boat, not one for the misses and a slow cruise so to speak set against the one pictured.

You personal choice of what you need will set you right, just expect to "appear" to get less for your money with a taskforce but resale value is relevant.

You sound like you know what you are doing when you mention transom condition etc so I am sure you will know what you are buying condition wise, just make sure you understand if your heart is ruling your head - ie: what do I want from a boat.

Best of luck and don't forget to let us know how you get on, and then, like everyone does, come back and ask all those needed questions - most of all, Have Fun!

Steve

Well, the deed has been done and it is now sitting in my driveway !.

After looking at a lot of others the boat represents a good compromise between a day pleasure boat and something to get me back into boat angling & boat owning............

Many miles were travelled and a lot of rubbish was viewed :whistling .............however, its pretty much a buyers market at the moment and I paid nothing even near the asking price.

Very Nice , I take it you are refering to the pictured boat at the beginning of your thread.

Yes indeed.............. and very, very pleased with what I have found so far .........hull is 85 but the outboards are 97 and have a full service history at Wills marine........plotter is new and fishfinder is not that old, but both were wired incorrectly !

I guess I might have a couple of test runs in the next couple of weeks and then spend some time get it fully ready for next season .............. its just that I am a fussy old git !
