Swings and roundabouts. I've got braid on a 525 mag and a Saltist. Casts almost as well as mono, no stretch so excellent bite detection and strength to diameter is superb.

But there are downsides as well. No stretch means the rod tip bounces around like crazy in any sort of sea. Also means you need a softer rod and to take it easy with a decent fish for fear of riving the hook out as braid gives no cushion unlike stretchy mono. If there is a lot of weed around you will be struggling to hold bottom as once the weight builds up it trips the lead very quickly (again unlike stretchy mono). And finally if you casting is not up to it you will get crack-offs and this can be both expensive and very difficult to unpick on the beach.

Braid has it's place and on balance I probably use my braid set-up more than my mono ones. But if I want out and out distance I use my 7HT Mag with .35mm mono, likewise if the sea is away (or there is loads of weed around) it is mono every time.

I think lots of people use braid on multis for casting, what Mack say is spot on, I have stopped using braid on my small multis because I must be a bit rough with them, and managed to bend a spool spindle on one of my 7ht"s, having said that they handled the braid well.

I have a slosh 20 which is a bit more robust than a 7ht, and it casts a dream with 40 lb braid, and one red Brake block, I also have braid on my slosh 30's for fishing from cliffs, dont know about magnets etc, dont particularly like them.

Dave.
