Hi guys I do appoligies in advance I believe this is probably a common post but still working around forum and search bar isnt currently letting type


I'm sending my self mad I'm currently looking at mono as a mainline but not sure what make to go for as most I'm looking at a 0.35mm diameter to feel my surfblaster 8000 up nicely with 440m

Keep it simple to start, mono is easy, cheap and does the job.

I like Rovex 10x, in red, 0.35mm is 19lb.

£13.50 for 2200m of it, bargain. Easy to see at night and during the day. Should be perfect for fixed spool beach fishing.

On my multis (slosh 20, fathom 15), I have loaded them up with 0.4mm 24lb, as it's more controllable.

Yeah am thinking mono especially being made aware of rocks and so on, may avoid the braid then is it worth going for a decent leader

What's the benefits to a multipler only reeling used things like that, baitcasters when gar fishing over in the states 8 years or so ago when it were more recent trips

Not much really, I gave a slosh 20 a go and enjoyed it, so I've swapped over for now, both have advantages and disadvantages.

Fixed spools are easier to fish with, especially at night and in windy conditions etc.

Fished braid on a fixed spool reel for years now, if I had to go back to mono think I would pack in fishing and that would be a catastrophe :eeks::thumbsdown:

I do like braid dont get me wrong but only fished for predator in still water and for that its amazing no current or movement and literally feel teeth through hook up braid

I look at braid being no where near as good as casting for distance as braid

More wind knots as lighter

No give with snags

But is awsome for the smaller diameter for sure and strength

No wind knots for me, better in a strong currant , far stronger than mono for a smaller diameter. Great for casting a long way.

I'm looking at a 0.35mm diameter

0.35 braid will have a bs of around 50lb, 0.35 mono a bs of around 20lb, would go with the 50lb braid myself and at least have a chance of pulling free if snagged.

Admittedly mono has better abrasion resistance, but matters not so much when it inevitably snaps at the leader knot when snagged and you lose the lot

Both have good and bad points. Most starting off will get used to their gear using mono, it's far more forgiving and less harsh on your gear. Due to stretch, the more mono you have out the less sensitive the fish bite and fight will feel ( like a rubber band effect ), this can be good in the way tension is more easely kept on certain species during the fight.

Braid is like driving a car without tyres and suspension, you feel just about every bump that hits the line. It's pretty much the opposite of what I just mentioned above about the mono. Braid can also be quite dangerous as it can slice through the skin on your hands if handled wrong. Due to its such thin diameter any knots formed in braid can be almost impossible to undo ( imagine trying to unpick a tightly packed knot in cotton ). Some hard fighting fish will quite easely break the same strength in braid over mono due to the lack of stretch. Mouths of fish can also tear leaving a whole the hook falls out of ( occasionally).

Most of us love using braid over mono hands down but for a novice there is a bit of a learning curve, which includes special knots. Braid also needs a few wraps of mono against the spool of some reels to stop the line slipping before loading the line on the reel. Many new reels are now designed to join braid straight to a spool without backing.

Hiya Greeny,
I much prefer braid for lrf & lure fishing but unlike a lot of anglers i prefer mono
(19lb 0.35 dia Rovex 10X) for bottom fishing.
On my local beaches or targeting smaller stuff for me braid worked fine but on my local pier due to the height above the water, the strong tidal pull & the fact we get some decent fish (double figure Huss, Hounds & Rays) i personally found braid a bit too direct/harsh when i hooked into a lump & have had the odd hook pull because of the lack of stretch when trying to keep the fish out of the pier legs so i've gone back to mono for that bit of cushioning it gives over braid for bottom fishing.
