Warm, bright, summer conditions took the edge of Braintree Sea Angling Club’s latest match where no sizeable codling were caught during 6 hours over on their favourite venue of Orfordness. The calm conditions meant that large shoals of whiting were stealing the bait as soon as it hit the water and it was difficult to catch anything other than these bait robbing pin whiting.
The match was won by Peter Costin, who scratched around for a mixed bag that included 2 dabs, 3 dogfish, 1 poor cod, and 8 whiting for a total weight of 9lb 5oz.
Second place went to Barrie Senior who had 7 whiting and 2 dabs for 5lb 9½oz, and in third spot was Colin Crocker who had 3 poor cod and 3whiting for 4lb 2½oz.
The next visit to the island for the Club will be overnight, when it’s hoped the darkness will produce some decent cod.
