Bridging camp Cod

Fished Bridging camp last night and didn’t have any luck but on the way back up to the car I spotted a heap of fish including 2 Codling the biggest of which I would say was 5lb+ The Codling had been filleted.

What got my back up was someone had dumped these fish next to the path down to the fleet! Whoever it was should be ashamed. The least he/she could have done it give it all back to the sea instead of stinking the path out with rotting fish!

Amongst the haul was 2 or 3 macky, a pout, Wrasse, small lsd, Garfish and a small eel 10" or so.

All I can say is this is why I won’t join a club and enter Comps! Killing fish just in case you might win £20! its sick!

How do you know it has anything to do with someone belonging to a club, they probably couldnt be bothered to carry it.Its not the first time its happened and it wont be the last, all you know is"it was an angler",most club anglers would have put that lot back.

Sounds to me the bag has fallen off a trolley and not been noticed. Why would you go to all the effort of a) catcing a 5lb cod, then b) filleting a 5lb cod, and only then dumping it. Maybe the anglers were abducted by aliens. Strange things happen in that county........ ;)

May be e.t couldnt carry it either:roll1:.Seen fish dumped in the car parks at bexi and ferrybridge before, seen a bloke this year with 40 mackies in a bucket,at the end of the day he confessed he didnt eat fish and wasnt too sure what he was going to do with them, the mind boggles.

Maybe I was a bit quick to blame club anglers. I apologize to those who took offence. :cc_surren

I was in a club 20 odd years ago. On my first comp we all met in a car park in Dorch to weigh in and most fish (the stuff no one wants to eat) went in the bin. I never fished another comp again.

As for the filleted cod the fillets were missing and just the heads etc left. There is no way it could have been dropped there by accident.

most of the fish your killing simply by catching them. if you dont want to kill fish dont fish

How many times have you seen a tide line made up of LSD at Abbottsbury?
that's not alway's done on purpose, when returning dogs try and throw them well past the breakers otherwise they have a habit of swimming straight back into the beach, don't worry about the throw they will survive it...tough little blighter's,also pay's to turn away any light from the water as soon as they hit it,they seem to be attracted by the light, smuts do the same thing given the chance:blink:

Although I totally agree that dogs are not always killed on purpose and that they do have a habit of swimming back onto the beach and dying so you do need to get them as far out as possible, please do be careful throwing them. If doggies are thrown for example by their tails then they can suffer from damaged or ripped cartilage which ultimately results in their demise through being less mobile.

Although I have no proof, I suspect that cartilage damage by throwing doggies by the tail damages thieir nervous system with some some of spinal damage, which with all good intentions could increase the number of the poor things washed back up onto the beaches.

The fatailities could of course also be caused by unhooking as doggies can be difficult to unhook - so my theory could be complete rubbish!

Hi,
Some interesting points raised. Personally, any fish caught should only be retained for bait or the table - anything else is just a waste. I'm certanly no competition angler, but to be honest, some of the best and most innovative anglers are from the competition element, and certainly most of the well known ones are highly regarded and responsible. Any competitions that waste fish are to my mind entirely the fault of the match organisers, and the modern way of thinking is catch and release. Years ago it was criminal to see the small boat comps landing hundreds of pounds of Smoothound at Lymington, just for the weigh in - thankfully that has now stopped more or less. As soon as the comps are changed, the match anglers adapt - fish kept alive weigh more for a start, so the top guys want to keep their fish alive at all costs for the weigh in if at the end - normally returning afterwards. However, there are always bad eggs in every walk of life :g:

On the subject of the fish on a path back towards the fleet, it MAY be possible that a foraging fox was sweeping the tideline, and doing a relay with the fish found, collecting them up in the same area before the next move back to his home turf - something I have seen on my local patch once or twice? I'm assuming it was middle of the night when the poster was making his way back to the car?

Tight lines all,
Mart.

I fished the RNLI open at Chesil a few years back.At the weigh in I couldnt believe the number of dead Smoothounds.Another time it was won with 30 scad, all dead and then dumped
all went for potbait. to return a fish that is going to die is worse out of sight out mind anglers are numptys who wont to wake up. i know a couple of blokes who fish to supply sea life centres and belive me most of what anglers catch die.

i agree,i always hold them lightly under the belly and kind of launch em like a bowling ball, which is why on a dog infested session my hand the next day is somewhat sore
same with hounds,i'll pick up from underneath,i'm often amazed when i see hounds being dragged up/carried by their tail's on west beach selsey :fish:

This topic is discussed and eventually turned into a farce on every regional forum (and some others) with great regularity. People always end up saying 'this person is that', 'that person is the other' (as has already started happening here.....and is unacceptable).

It is a very emotive and salient topic (which is why I am going to close it rather than get shot of it) and is worthy of intelligent debate; this however, is not the 'angling politics' forum.......and as mentioned, the subject is worthy of 'intelligent' debate, rather than a witch hunt or 'he did this', 'she did that' types of post. (Please read the rules).
