Conclusions after four hours out last Wednesday afternoon. Plenty of fish around – but only small ones. Bites galore. Plagues of undersized whiting and rockling but, pleasingly, other species starting to emerge.

Fishing the flood with the usual lug/squid combination I had 6 undersized channels, 6 rockling (one horribly plump!), a small thornback ray and two crabs! Others had the odd plaice, sole and doggie. And loads of tiny whiting. And, be warned, weevers too.

So, hardly spectacular, but the feeling remains that things are slowly improving. And once those Tackle Box heroes have managed to clear a few more bays, things will really start to motor. Roll on Spring!
