Too good to eat! Great bass bait them buggers, like said, nice and bony and stays on the hook a treat! I would swap a bucket of scad for one of mackerel any day!

You may only catch small ones...We can get them upto 2lb.They actually make very good eating.

 

I would say all fish like anything organic are edible if you know how to perpare and cook them properly that is, veryy few things that cannot be eaten

Cook them the same as pout. Boil for 2 hours, stirring with a wooden spoon. Allow to cool. Throw away fish. Eat spoon.

Very boney. Only good as fish stock.

'About one in the morning a load of chinees people came and all they had was feathers i thought you can not feather in the night but they knew more than i did as they were banging in fish they did not keep any mackie thay only wanted the scad because thay make soup out of it errrr not my cup of tea.'

You can eat anything. Whether you like it or not is up to you.........

i've seen an old boy at bnewhaven plling in several big ones, to around 2lb, and taking them home, reckoned he preferred them to macky.

Doubt it very much ...... the same chinese lot use to come down our local piers slaughtering loads of the things every night - dread to think how many thousands of scad they killed :schmoll:

If you can get 2lb ers, bear in mind they fight very hard and perhaps better than mackerel.

when you've caught all you 'need' to keep, try fishing for them one at a time on the lightest tackle you can.

Then take a close look - notice how even the eyes have a streamlined surface ; the pectoral fins have a shallow depression to lie in , flat against the body ; the dorsal fin has a groove to drop down into.

Real little speedsters.

Eating: the japanese check on their fat content (just like they do for Tuna) when buying them from Killybegs....wonder if they are for human consumption ?

You can add polar bear's liver to that list, they accumulate a toxin. Plus pufferfish skin/liver and the entire poison arrow frog (should you happen to find them on the chiller counter at Tesco's).
