The RNLI offers safety advice to boat owners as part of it’s Prevention Programme, and tries to help boat owners avoid incidents on the water.

As part of the ongoing improvement process, we are trying to establish if there are reasons why people do not avail of some of the services we offer.

To help us improve what we do and ensure that our programmes continue to be relevant to boat owners, we would appreciate if you would take a few moments of your time to answer the following questions.

1. Have you had an RNLI SEA Check?

2. If not, have you previously heard of RNLI SEA Check?

3. If you have heard of SEA Check but not had one, what has prevented you from using the service?

All feed back will be taken into account, but all comments will go into the review anonymously - so please be as open and frank as possible with your answers - if you would rather your answer was not public, please feel free to answer via PM.

On behalf of the RNLI, thank you very much for your time.

In the meantime if anyone would like to arrange a SEA Check, please let me know the location of your boat and I will PM the contact details of your nearest LSSO.

I have had one, advice was sound, interesting and above all gave myself and the rest of the family the confidence that we were making our boating experience as safe as possible.

Really friendly, professional chat, couple surprises turned up (And I thought I knew it all :D)

I would recommend everyone gets one. The service is free but we felt that afterwards the RNLI certainly deserved some contribution so we donated.

I for one would like to see this thread as a sticky please?

ive been organizing them throw John at Conway for the lads at prestatyn sail club. we have been putting up to 7 boats throw them at a time (so far only 26 out of 100) .
the first one i seen being done was at the go fishing at Birmingham and the guys went throw the equipment as well as asking questions like what do you think causes the most accidents on a boat IE slips trips and cuts. also how would you get in if your steering brakes .
when my boat went throw this year it was just go throw the check list .
still it was well worth doing . next year i was thinking of doing some quiz sheets with questions like when going in to the local port witch side should the green boy be on.
some of the feed back i go back is why would i carry oars for as my boat is too big.
me i strap them ever side of the engine to make a temporary tiller arm i the steering bust.
ive been also trying to get the lads who haven't had there boats done get them done at home where its more privet.

i would recommend any one having the check done .

Hi.
I have heard of them from on here, i have actually been looking at getting one in the next few weeks but wasnt sure due to my location it would be possible, thought i may have to wait untill i take the boat to the coast, but then if i am missing something or have a problem i got a dilema as i am a long way from the coast, am certain to get one done though for the piece of mind it will give me afterwards, especialy as i am new to boat owning.

Regards, Rob.

i have had one, about three years ago when i got the current boat, based in sovereign harbour so probably the same bloke as hammyloz (where are you these days?).
the sea check was an excellant informal but detailled and knowledgable chat that raised a number of issues that i had not thought of and presented alternatives to those that i had covered. not certain about some of the advice given, how many people do carry a tarp on warps that can go outside the hull to plug a hole?- but then again if you needed one you woudnt half wish you had one!
No one should go boating without the advice, a theme seems to be that surprising advice will be given. Not sure about the value of getting the same advice every year tho.- particulary as the advisers are volunteers and they will need to get to a new audience
for me an improvement woud be the written report you get. from memory it was largely a tick box "we have discussed this" form whilst i took lots of notes in the log book others may not and may benefit from a more comprehensive report- i still occassionally think i must check the notes and implement some of those i have not yet done.
which perhaps suggest another "improvement" i got a lot of advice re sources of materials spares ect but have yet to source a good supply of wooden wedge hole fillers so why not the advisors come prepared with sources of the equipment they are recomending? - but i do acknowledge obvious potential problems with this

Prestatyn sailing club (Cheers Zirgo)

1. Have you had an RNLI SEA Check - do you have any suggestions on how it may be improved?
a. Had my first check 3 years ago and have had one every year since (new boats) its spot on and keeps everthing up to date on the boat

2. If not, have you previously heard of RNLI SEA Check?
a. As virgo said previous post he promotes the check at the club and more want to have this service done as its not a pass and fail just good sound advice.

3. If you have heard of SEA Check but not had one, what has stopped you?
no excuse for any one they will pop around to your house just book it

I have had one on my current boat about 4 years ago, and the boat I had before that. I have followed just about all the advice I was given at the time of the last one, but should really get another one done as the advice may have changed or been updated.
I also live 30 odd miles inland but the RNLI guy still came to me last time to check the boat over.
Well worth getting it done and I would advise all boat owners to have one. Give the guy a donation for the RNLI at the same time:notworthy

excuses like its just like a MOT ,only valid on the day its done is no excuse .
boating is a cheapish and unregenerate sport to get in to. you don't need to do a test to drive a boat, no one stops any one from owning a boat. get the checks done and keep the sport free. these checks are free and have highlighted the need for some small things that have been over looked (eg one lad had removed his first aid kit) .
i see the day when you will all have to do a power boat test ,a sea safety check and a MOT on the trailer. also we will all have to ware a life jacket but till this happens we do what we can to keep safe.

Think they are a very good idea, but for those that say there is no excuse as they will come to you, i live two and a half hours from the nearest coast, i seriously doubt they would want to travel that far to check my boat over, in fact i would feel awfull asking them to !!!!!
Makes much more sense to take it to the coast and have them do it,
A soon as i go down it will be the first thing i do.

Had one carried out on my last boat when it was at Sovereign Harbour. Chap that did it was great went through list chatting seemed in no rush, and didnt even looked shocked / appaled when some of the stuff i had on board came out. He just explained it all, nice and simply, well worth getting it done.
