Can you wash a floatation suit

Yes seriously I have thought of washing my avanti suit after a few trips it smells like a Turkish wrestlers jockstrap and I thought maybe a cool wash for thirty mins and drip dried might do the trick. Has anyone tried this as my boy refuses to get in the car when it,s present. and please no humorous answers like can you see through a glass eye as it would just be silly.........

Ok Chezz I hope you find what you are looking for.
Yes you can . Mine goes in the washing machine whenever it stinks as bad as yours does then it goes in the tumble drier. BUT . My floatation suit keeps me warm. My guy cottons keep me dry. I dont expect my floatation suit to be water proof because they aint, not after a few weeks wear from brand new anyway.
If there is going to be the odd shower then it does fine till i get home and back in for another tumble dry.
Hope this helps chezz. :D

Like you my suit had the whiff of a thousand dead lug, So although it states on the garment not to bung it in the washing machine ........i went for it on a hand wash setting. The outcome, one suit that smells good, not all the stains gone. And after a spray with some reproofing, water proof as well. Would definitely go for the last step as detergent ruins the water proofing, and use a variety that does not need heat to activate. also drip dry after its trip in the washing machine. Did not have any issues cleaning the suit this way
I have a two piece Fladen that gets this annual treatment in the summer. I use the back lawn , a hose pipe, a scrubbing brush and a bottle of Fairy liquid. Soak the outside of the suit with water and give it a going over with the brush and Fairy. Rinse with the hose pipe and hang on the washing line, this seems to remove the crud and the smell, even on the inside, I have no noticeable drop in the water proofing of the suit, which is now some 5 or 6 years old.
Wash using soap rather than your normal detergent - leave out the fabric conditioner - then drip dry.

When dry spray with silicon to reproof.

I am always bunging mine in the wash.
I wash mine the jacket on its own and then the pants
Then turn them inside out and bung them in the drier
I was my 2 piece in the washing machine on a low setting but use washing up liquid and hung out to dry and it is still as water proof as when it was bought
To expand Leons post; the Nik Wax TX product is not the thing that makes the garment waterproof, that is the function of the Goretex/e Vent, polyurethane coating etc. system used by your garments manufacturer. TX and similar products are DWR's or durable water repellents, the one that causes to rain on your waterproofs bead into those tiny bubble like droplets on the fabric surface. The principal function of the DWR is to repel water so preventing the fabric from wetting out, i.e. becoming saturated and hence loosing its breathability. A secondary and almost accidental function is to provide a temporary low capability waterproofing.
Dirt on a garment attracts water and cancels out the effect of even an intact DWR which sometimes can be reactivated by a gentle washing followed by a gentle heat tumble dry or cool iron. in accordance with the manufacturers instructions or phone their tech offices for advice.
The word Durable is open to debate. Regularly sitting in the car whilst wearing a treated garment will soon remove the DWR from the points of contact with the car. Carrying a tackle box or similar will remove the DWR from the points of contact with the carry strap. Even swinging your arms whilst walking removes it from the inside face of the sleeves and corresponding surface of the coat body.
Durability depends on so many factors and may last for a week or a year or a lifetime. .

Years ago I washed one of my floaty suits on a cool wash in the machine, then hung it out to dry....all the floatation linings in the salopettes came adrift and ended up around the ankles, leaving me looking like an hour glass with all the sand in the bottom.

The jacket is still good years on, and gets reproofed every year with Nikwax..after a good wash in the machine as above.

To clean my other floaty, I get the wife to accompany me to the car wash, I stand there, get the full monty with power hose and brushes and then get waxed to finish off.... I get some strange looks, but the wifey likes to give me a good scrub!

I then put the floaty in a bin bag, and hang it out to dry , once dry outside, I turn it inside out and febreeze the lining.

Sweet !

Dave
Whatever you do, don't go in the drive through car wash with your suit on. It'll likely pull your arms and legs off . I sponge mine down, inside and out (with soap as others recommend, not detergent) and hang it over the bath to dry. Works for me.
Car wash..... this has got to work..

Prefer the jetwash myself !

Dave
Maybe if it stinks on inside some better deodorant
I've used the Nikwax and then Nikwax re-waterproofer and doesn't seem too bad afterwards.
Mine is an old floaty, so it's never going to be 100% waterproof imo, but it's good enough - keeps the worst out, apart from the odd damp patch, but no big deal.

Damp patch caused by RAIN, I might add!
