Hi guys,
A bit late doing this as I went fishing last Wednesday but why not!
After postponing a trip from the week before due to the arrival of storms that never turned up I had my heart and mind set on a trip on the only day I could and it was forecast to chuck it down. However like most of you there is no way a little bit of rain is going to stop me in my tracks but the signs weren't good but I decieded to crack on.
Leaving the house at 3.50 am so I could get down for first light I realised I was very low on fuel and had 10 miles left in car and found my closest 24hour was closed!!! I made the trip to the next one and literally only just made it and was very lucky sio thats the last time I let the idiot light go on.
After a good run down I parked up and went to pick my spot on the Ferrybridge end of Chesil to feather chuck for some Mackerel as haven't had an in ages and wanted to use some for bait too. It was beautiful morning with the tide and waves bulding and managed 7 decent Mackerel before the weather started to come in. No where near as good as last years Mackerel fishing however I had enough bait for the day and for a cheeky BBQ so plenty.
I went back to the car and decided to get the lure rod out and head over the road to Portland harbour as I have never fished there and it was quiet. I started to work a cheap Tronix surface lure working my away along the bank trying to get some interest. Took a 5 min break then cast again and within a few turns of the reel I saw a Bass rise out the water and jump for the lure!! This was one of the most exhillarating fsihing moments I have had and with it being my first surface lure attempt someohow managed to get over excited and move the lure as the Bass went to smash it. Yep it never came back so tried working the different lures and nothing.
As the rain was coming in I headed down to the Ferrybridge to shelter and try and work the water there but this is where I should of gone home. Within minutes I had a massive tangle, then managed to crack the ceramic in a ring guide and then frayed the line!!! This needed a quick DIY repair with some plumbing tape and super glue and back on fishing. I then had the great odea of casting the surface lure as close to the structure of the bridge as possible and work it back towards me and did a couple of sweet casts and then boom lure straight into the bridge strut and smashed everywhere.
Time for the Fiish Minow to come out and first cast the DIY repair job didn't work to well and the line got caught in the crack and snapped to see the brand new out of the box lure fly further and further away from me not attached!! I decided to have lunch and move on round to Portland.
On arriving on Protland I put some Mackerel on a 2 hook flapper and the crabs seemed to be taking all the bait so back to the lure fishing. Well my luck seemed to continue!!!! After getting very very wet with everything I own completely soaked through I knew I had been beaten. Tried a few spots and a few different lures but still new to it so not too disheartened yet.
Anyway I avoided the blank and main thing for me is I learnt a lot about lure retireval and where not to cast a lure so some lessons learnt for next time.
