Cleaning an imax thermal suit?

6545 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  lighty
Just got back from my travels and realised my thermal suit is stinking and could do with a good clean. Anyone got any tips? Not sure if I can put in the washing machine as dont want it to lose its water proofing...

Cheers in advance

Mine has washing instructions on the label in the jacket, mine says less than 40 deg, don't iron or tumble dry.
I prefer to use Nikwax as a soap it's always worked well for me.

In my experience there is always a risk involved washing waterproof gear!
All ive ever done with my flotation suits, is give them a wipe over with a sponge with a bit of warm water and soap, then given them a spray with the stuff they sell in camping supply stores for waterproofing tents. Always worked for me!!
Get in the shower wearing it, with a scrubbing brush to get the muck off. Use either just water or pure soap flakes not detergent / washing powder.
1 Read the manufacturers label for instructions.
2Whatever you do DO NOT use common or garden washing detergent that contains bleach. This buggers the DWR.
Use something like either pure soapflakes or Dreft.
Do not use a fabric conditioner.
Before using the washing machine take out and clean the soap tray.
Then run the machine on the Spin cycle to flush it out.
Only then wash the garment and re- DWR it using something like a
Nik Wax or Grangers re proofing product. Possibly even this but it might screw up the breathability

If your garment will take tumble drying then do so as it will enhance the DWR.
Sometimes a wash and tumble dry is all that is needed instead of doing the Nik / Grangers treatment
All I did was to put mine in the washing machine with washing powder then hung it dry, came out clean, are the imax suits waterproof? if it needs it I'll febseal it.

The label says hand wash only, just wanted to double check if anyone had failed cleaning it before I went and done it haha. Cheers for the replies guys. :]

I bet the sales blurb / swing ticket indicates some waterproof ability. Actually the Amazon page says 100% waterproof! Personally I would give the garment another wash in a pure soap product, rinse and spin cycle (if the label allows this) let it dry again then feb/nik/seal it.

Have a look here for a bit more info http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/expert-advice/guide-to-waterproofing-

I know of a guy who swears by brushing on a dose of clear Thompson's WaterSeal Waterproofing Wood Protector. (onto his jackets not his body!)

DO NOT USE FABRIC CONDITIONER
I've stuck all my suits in the wash on hand wash cycle the last was a penn flotation suit and me new one is a IMAX two piece never had a problem even put them in the tumble on a low setting.

There far to much guff spoken about it, I bet most people don't put them in the washing machine because the misses won't let them that simple....
It works fine, just like putting your blacks in the microwave if you don't try things you will never know......
